> So the official narrative is truthful according to you?
If you're interested, here's a reading list I think you'd enjoy. Reading these should give you a general idea of the rise of contemporary Islamist extremism, up to and including ISIS (links to Amazon so that you can buy 'em or pirate at your discretion):
Lawrence Wright's The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11
Thomas Ricks' Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2003 to 2005
Joby Warrick's Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS
The "official narrative" is often oversimplified and occasionally outright misleading (see: muh WMDs in Iraq), but it's certainly a lot closer to the truth than the truly batshit stuff you can find on /r/conspiracy. I'd seriously recommend reading all of these--it's fascinating, but even if it weren't, having some level of understanding of the issues facing states like Afghanistan, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria is a pretty important thing, I think.
