Wear it on a loop around your neck. When your MIL says something crummy, don't look at her or engage with her; just silently hold the counter up and click it.
At the end of every day, post the number of clicks prominently on the refrigerator door.

To be safe, don't forget to add 1-2 every time you write about it. This thing might come in handy.
Get a tally counter next time. They're only a few dollars and it'll save you a lot of time.

i don't see what's unrealistic about duct taping one of these to your weapon's handle
Just pack a tally counter with your smokestuffs and click it before each bowl. I doubt you'll get through 9999 bowls this year so no pen and paper required.
Something like this might work. Personally I just an app on my cellphone or keep an approximate mental note
