I always found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Gamble,_Washington interesting - a couple East Machias lumberman founded a town and imitated some of the architecture from back home. I'd love to visit sometime and compare.
http://www.amazon.com/Good-Fences-Pictorial-History-Englands/dp/0892726768 also has an interesting history of the post-Civil War depopulation of Maine and New England, in the context of the evolution and decay of the stone wall architecture. Great book and the author gave a talk about it that's online somewhere. During the talk he takes a 5 gallon pail of stones and carefully constructs a miniature stone wall on the table without interrupting his talk.
edit I was wrong about the lecturer - it was Kevin Gardner of New Hampshire. He referenced the Good Fences book and several others. http://boingboing.net/2013/04/02/lecture-on-stone-wall-building.html
