The original is in Chinese and/or a light novel I believe. I think these are the translated versions
Surprisingly these aren't comics but I think those are out there too.
That's why they mentioned both Wuxia and Xianxia
Wuxia is Martial Heroics, this includes super human feats but not much if any supernatural elements.
Xianxia is more overt higher fantasy with ghosts demons magic spells and all that.
An example of a hugely popular Xianxia that has been released in English is Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.
Have you read any Danmei at all?
Mo Dao Zu Shi is pretty popular, has an animated show out to accompany the novel as well as a manhua.
Highly recommend Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation for those who want a side of murder mystery, tragedy, and necromancy with their gay romance.
It has also been adapted as an anime, titled by the pinyin of the title Mo Dao Zu Shi, a live action on Netflix titled The Untamed, and a manga.
No, I really appreciate the advice! I read a couple of chapters of the translation on Exiledrebel, and had a couple of "huh?" moments. I think your advice to give it some time to breathe is good. I'll probably watch the spinoff movies soon. Sounds like a rare situation where the adaptation really did improve on the source material.
According to Amazon the paperback is coming out in December. It looks legit (has the author cited properly).
Honestly, fanfiction isn't my speed at all (I could just see why audiences might want more and take it upon themselves...). But I'd be really really interested in the analysis. Is any of it translated, do you think? I'll have to go looking...
Anyway, thanks for all our your thoughts on this - it's been fun! My work friend watched this a few weeks ahead of me, so I've had one IRL person to fangirl with. But if I could be a noona, we joke that she's an ajumma, so I will be really curious to also get her impressions of the novel (I think she's going to read the online translation).
Mo Dao Zu Shi / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu sees the main character raised from the dead 13 years after his original body dies. He has to pretend to be someone else because he's hated.
> Wei Wuxian was once one of the most powerful men of his generation, a talented and clever young cultivator who harnessed martial arts and spirituality into powerful abilities. But when the horrors of war led him to seek more power through demonic cultivation, the world’s respect for his abilities turned to fear, and his death was celebrated throughout the land.
> Years later, he awakens in the body of an aggrieved young man who sacrifices his soul so that Wei Wuxian can exact revenge on his behalf. Though granted a second life, Wei Wuxian is not free from his first, nor the mysteries that appear before him now. Yet this time, he’ll face it all with the righteous and esteemed Lan Wangji at his side, another powerful cultivator whose unwavering dedication and shared memories of their past will help shine a light on the dark truths that surround them.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
> This historical fantasy tale of two powerful men who find each other through life and death is now in English, for the very first time.

But when the horrors of war led him to seek a new power through demonic cultivation, the world's respect for his skills turned to fear, and his eventual death was celebrated throughout the land.

It's also an anime but because it's from China most of the openly romantic and sexual elements were censored, so the truth of the story has to be hinted with things like the animators having them get into wedding red clothing at one point. You'd have to be pretty oblivious to not figure out that they're in love and a couple at the end though.

Currently, Seven Seas Entertainment has the official right to the English translation, only the 1 Vol is out right now, and as I heard it will take 5 Vol to have the complete translation.
I would encourage you to buy and read the official book, you can find it in amazon easily and its not really expensive as its a soft cover.

I won't link unofficial translations but a quick google search might help if you are really desperate, the most popular finished fan translator has taken down his files tho so you might have to use an archive restoration website to read it.
On another note, Scumbag Villains Self Saving System (From the same author as Mo Dao Su Zhi) will release its 2 Vol in two weeks and the translators who are working on that are that ones who originally did the fan translation on TUMBLR so you know they have dedication to the work.
It is a available on Amazon.
This is official art. Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) is a best seller BL novel, donghua (Chinese anime, free to watch), manhua (Chinese manga, fan translation on Mangadex), and live-action series ("The Untamed", free to watch).
In you're up for some serious Chinese fantasy, I would highly recommend The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. The main character is bi, but he doesn't actually have any relationships with women.

If you aren't familiar with wuxia novels/shows, it will be a wild ride! There is an animated version but the book is much more detailed. If you want to see if the genre is a good fit, check out the very first epsidoe of the show on YouTube. (https://youtu.be/m346FShZ5Dc)
This book is probably my favorite of all time. It's not supposed to be an allegory for the lgbt experience, but the back bone of the plot feels that way.
It's a best seller BL novel, donghua (Chinese anime, free to watch), manhua (Chinese manga, fan translation on Mangadex), and live-action series ("The Untamed", free to watch).
All versions are amazing
The fan translation is here and it's good enough. The first of five books comes out in December and then they'll print a new one every 3 months. It has a lot of hype, the first book made it to the #8 most-sold books in Amazon in the first 24 hours.
hi! these are the few sites that can ships to the uk (i will be using mdzs as an example)!
the green circles means that it's available for pre-order and the red circles means that it's not out for pre-orders yet!

Hope that helps!!
Awesome! And to update on the above info a little bit - not sure you are aware that an official English translation of the novel is finally about to be published, so some of the fan translations I listed may be removed from the internet due to copyrights now being owned by the publisher. Anyway, first volumes of the novel are currently available in preorder, so if you have money to spare and lots of patience to wait - it will be well worth it to get and read a properly researched and annotated translation:
