This is what I'm currently using to light both the plants, with 3 lamps "surrounding" my bigger first plant and around a quarter foot of distance between the plant and the lamps so every leaf gets plenty of light. Though I am definitely going to be looking into something a bit bigger then this for the flowering stage
This is my first year starting seeds. Until now, we've always purchased seedlings from the garden center, but I always got frustrated with not being able to find the plants I wanted.
I started my seeds about a month ago and put them on a plastic tray in my basement. We saved up yogurt cups to start them in (poke holes in the bottom for drainage). We also bought a Full Spectrum Grow Light which provides the type of light seeds require to germinate. Because I ordered seeds, I was able to grow all the things I want to eat.
When it got warmer, we moved the trays to our sunroom where they could also get some limited natural light. Depending on the vegetable, some of my seedlings are now anywhere from 1" to 4" tall. Finally took my trays outside today for some full natural sunlight.
Testing out this 30$ amazon grow light with my succ setup because I didn’t know better and bought it before looking too much into the lights. Has both red, blue, and white LEDs, and after reading the other subs on these types of lights I put them close to the plants.
We’ll see how well they grow in a couple of months! Currently on for 12 hours a day. Just repotted the jade plant, and have some props I’m waiting will (hopefully) sprout! First time trying propagation.
led, not sure if it's the same since i didn't buy it but it seems similar to this one and on one of the brightest setting

Oh you know, just the usual neglect it under a cheap grow light and water it when I remember (roughly every 10-14 days maybe?)
Honestly I am shocked it’s doing as well as it is because I had heard they were notoriously finicky. Good luck with yours!!

this is the light
amazon has a lot of great grow lights of all sizes. my best friend has this one and I’ve got it on my christmas list because all of my plants currently have to stay in a room I hardly go in to get enough light and I miss them on my bookshelf. I also have 2 full spectrum grow light bulbs with standard bases I picked up from walmart for like 7$. Started my pepper seeds with those during the spring and they worked great as well!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082YWKWGH/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_1FED28XBKYM7KC5WWAZB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 although full disclosure these are just the cheapest ones I could find and I did no research whatsoever into the spectrum and brightness or whatever, so mileage may very but they work well for me, thanks.
Thanks! This is the one I have and it seems to be plenty for any green plants but any that get stress colors lose them unless the light is RIGHT on top of it (Crassula Small Red Carpet was great to test this as it changes from red to green and back very quickly!), and worried some of them will start stretching. Plus 12 hours is the max for the timer on that one and doesn't have a switch that works with the outlet timers.
I see
If I were to get a grow light like this, what settings should I put in terms of light type, brightness and duration? (This is strictly for the canna)
Thanks!
I have full spectrum LED grow lights that are on for about 14 hours, and probably gets about 3-4 hours of indirect sun (10 in away from a north-facing window). The plants are growing, but is it possible that these lights aren't enough? Here's the link to the lights I'm using:LED Full Spectrum Grow Lights on Amazon
I live in Wisconsin, so I get it. Winter is like 6 months long here, lol.
I have this grow light. I’m able to adjust colors and brightness, and it even has a timer. Getting a few of these will get you by, especially on a budget.
Good/bad qualities of this light? I only need something until the night time temperature starts to even out so I don’t want to drop Mars or Spider Farmer type money.
I think one / few factory makes them in China and they’re sold everywhere on amazon and the internet and I’ve replaced a couple so far, and also been gifted fancier ones, and tbh, they’ve all been the same. They’re LEDs in a bar or grid, I don’t need a remote or extra stand or whatever else, when I get up I turn the lights on, and when I close the curtains in my home I turn the lights off, so if I were to buy myself one right now, it would be something simple like this.

Also, I see that there are also completely white “full spectrum” lights, and I have not tried that yet. I am curious and want to, because tbh, the colored LEDs are very strip club / shitty frat house / tv drug lab vibes and I can’t enjoy the color of my plants during the day when these lights are on. I personally much rather have white lights on them and illuminate my plants, if they all work the same.
I use this one: Grow Light for Indoor Plants - Upgraded Version 80 LED Lamps with Full Spectrum & Red Blue Spectrum, 3/9/12H Timer, 10 Dimmable Level, Adjustable Gooseneck,3 Switch Modes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082YWKWGH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_7ll-FbT67T9CW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and it seems to be doing a good job. On sunny days I don’t turn it on or only have it go for a couple of hours, and then on overcast days I’ll run it for the max
I just added support sticks. The tallest one is still flopping over, but the other 3 are staying up with the stick.
Main issue is I don't have a spare cob light for vegging, since I started these seeds before I harvested my girls. I was hoping to give these seedlings a 1-2 week head start before I harvest my mature girls. Then transplant these seedlings to coco so I could cut a couple weeks off my cycle. I definitely messed up because I thought standard lights would be enough for seedlings.
I am thinking of ordering this, which should be here by tomorrow if I order it within the next few hours.

Do you think these cheap grow lights will help with the seedlings stretch? I'll be able to place the lights right above the seedlings.

Im going to use the two in tandem, parallel over the plants, not splayed out like a freaking sea monster as in the Amazon ad...but this is an experiment in many ways, as someone pointed out these rigs are cheaply made and designed so it may not be cost effective in the long run. I found this model runs 35$ on Amazon...mine was 32$ and will arrive Wednesday...this one didn’t get much use according to my buddy so I’ll say it’s newish. Time will tell.
member nirvanamushroomsubs has graciously pointed out that while a light like this may give seedlings a boost, they lack the proper wavelengths for healthy, sustained growth. So I withdraw my recommendations for these lights. However, as I am the kind of guy who likes to fix problems, I have found an inexpensive alternative:

Three growth modes, timer, 10 settings....32$. Compact and portable.
Oh wow, at a casual glance my eyes saw big...I just bought one of these though. I can’t hang mine so I need something with a stand of some kind:

I got this guy to start out with my windowsill until I moved it over to another table and put a better suited light there. It's cheap, you can keep it super compact and seemed to do the job ok. Fairly long cord with an easy timer. If you can clamp it on the shelf above that would be preferable because it kinda gets in the way for moving stuff in and out
Grow Light for Indoor Plants -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082YWKWGH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share It’s $22 on sale right now on Amazon. We have two. They’re a little weak depending on what you’re looking for, but they work great for our needs!
I have a variety of different lights for all sorts of needs. Here are my favorite -

My African Voilet has never bloomed more and the floor standing light helped my canna lily bloom in winter rather than going dormant!
Now, if you're looking for something more serious, I got this baby during one of their flash sales. This light is amazing. My bunny ears have impressive and noticeable growth every single day.

One caution if you with the more expensive and powerful light - slowly introduce your plants so you don't burn them.
This is the on o have now after looking at it it seems to be a 40w lamp? I'm wondering if it just isn't getting enough light coverage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082YWKWGH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Here's the one I got. There's 10 levels of brightness. Amazon light
i’m a huge fan of this one!
The ones in the photo is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082YWKWGH. However, they are very weak and I don't recommend them (I used this light meter to measure it. My goal is to achieve around 400FC - relevant article about FCs). I've updated my setup with better lights: New photo of my workspace.
The new setup uses this grow light bulb and this lamp. It took me awhile to find a desk lamp that's tall enough, and also has a wide enough opening to accept the wide grow light bulbs. Side note, when I need a brighter light, I use these grow light bulbs.
check this one out! It’s the one I have and I love it!
I have some but I guess I have them set wrong. Or they're crap.

Are those cheap grow lights on amazon worth it for starting seeds? I see those GE bulbs that are ~$10 each, but with the cost of getting a lamp to put them in it'd be like $50-60 total. There's tons of gooseneck type of grow lights on there for ~$30 each (https://www.amazon.com/Grow-Light-Indoor-Plants-Gooseneck,3/dp/B082YWKWGH and https://www.amazon.com/GroDrow-Starting-Spectrum-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B092R2BR2C stuff like that), but other dedicated grow lights being easily $100+ scares me into thinking these cheaper copy-cat products are nearly a scam or something. Anyone use these before?

I did not know that there was a correlation between watering and etiolation (thought it was just light). I had watered weekly because the soil always looked dry on top. I'll switch to biweekly and see how the plant fares. Thanks for the knowledge!
Using this at the brightest dimmable setting with all colors on (white/red/blue) and have tried really up close and now a little farther away. Should I get more powerful / higher wattage lights?
What do you mean by get a real light? I have 2 of these set up, are they not good?
