The undeniably trusty HBX. It takes a beating and it's been around for years so you can order cheap parts if he manages to break something.

I mean, you've got a 9 year old. He's going to pull the trigger and smash it into something or worse yet be in danger of having fun. This thing is small, light, almost all plastic, not too fast which means that he'll more than likely be able to play with it longer than anything else anyone is suggesting to you. For most of us, you bring a car out to drive and you break something before running out of 3+ batteries.

This little thing is just going to eat packs without breaking a sweat unless he just sends it 20 feet in the air or unga bunga smashes it.

I see a lot of the RC youtube reviewers flog this HBX 16689. It's 1/16th scale. Comes with two batteries and if you look up the youtube videos you'll see it takes a pretty great bruising and just keeps going. The first link is for the newly released Redcat Volcano 16, which seems to be a decent entry level ready to run smaller scale truck for $100. The second link is for the exact same truck, only it has a different name/body/tires for $15 less. These are pretty much identical trucks that use the same parts and have several good reviews online if you do some looking. The last link is for the brushless version of this truck, which is not much more money but you will have to wait a couple of weeks for shipping. In my opinion the brushless is worth the wait, but I also understand that this is Christmas and getting something the day of makes a difference. Maybe get the standard version for your son and buy the brushless for yourself...
