Halt pepper spray I've been using this for years. Carry with me every time I ride. Started using it when I commuted in the early morning dark when you couldn't see the dog until it was at your heels.

Once you spray a dog it will never bother you again. You can find it at some bike shops, Amazon but they ship it ground since it's an aerosol and a few big box stores.

Pitbull-mix owner here - I've pepper sprayed an off leash pitbull as well. All off leash dogs should be assumed aggressive until proven otherwise. All off leash dogs charging at you ARE aggressive until proven otherwise, and frankly, unless it's my buddy's dog greeting me because he missed me, I'm not terribly interested in finding out if they want to play or bite. My dog was attacked by off leash dogs and now she's dog aggressive. I don't leave the house without my Halt! II dog mace because if I don't defend my dog she defends herself and that does a whole lot more damage.

This is a perfect example of layered self defense, de-escalation, and lessons learned. I definitely want some people OC spray now - the stuff I carry is designed to not be cruel to dogs. OG formula halt is 0.35% capsaicin. Halt 2 is 1%

He's spraying the dog with dog repellent which is a mild version of pepper spray. It's because OP's dog is poorly trained and big dogs can easily bust through crappy screens and on to mail people.

I never leave home without my dog mace. It may seem cruel, but they have an obligation to keep their dog on leash and you have an obligation to keep your dog safe. Your dog is #1, and and if you have to spray their dog it is 100% their fault

I'm not saying it is the best. It was available from Amazon so I got it. It shoots a very concentrated stream a short distance. Without a light it is useless at night because you can't see where the spray is going. And of course the only time I've used it in anger was at night. Other times when owners see me pull it out after threatening to spray their dog they scramble to police up their animal.

I plan on picking some up before I start getting into gravel riding. I hear people run into dogs all the time and I am not looking forward to it since I have never gotten along with dogs for whatever reason.
