It is an excellent book on how Kenner was mistreated by Superintendent Eric Brunnemann (at many agencies, 3 whistle blower complaints & an IG investigation would have meant Brunnemann would be filing papers in a basement) as well as on the history of the National Park Service, especially how it has evolved in the last 50 years.

That is certainly part of it, money too. But you would think an endangered species program would be sacred to the National Park Service and protected from collateral damage. Hard Lessons in a Hard Land -- new book by a National Park Service employee at another park who was bullied by Eric Brunnemann. Brunnemann also targeted the endangered black footed ferret program at that park as he did the California Condor program at Pinnacles park

You are correct that this is a tension within the National Park Service. It is also a tension in some states between the public and the stewards of the land.
