You can get hooks with a sort of curved bit, like the top of a headphone stand. Example, this one is a silicone curve, but I've seen this sort of hook with a wooden curved bit as well.

I have a few Hifimans with padded headbands (HE400SE, Edition XS) I need to watch this, a thinner metal hook will leave indentation on them. But thinner metal hook is fine with the Ananda and R70X which have suspension with bare metal headbands.

The other thing you can do is just wrap something around the hook, I have a wooden headphone stand on order but until that arrives I just wrapped a cloth around another stand I have and with that it's big enough not to indent the headband. /u/-2323's suggestion with cardboard would work just as well.
