Looks about right for an hour long, once a month furminator session.
We’ve found it a lot easier to brush daily with a retractable slicker brush (like this: https://www.amazon.com/Hertzko-Self-Cleaning-Slicker-Brush/dp/B00ZGPI3OY/ ), maybe 3 minutes per day. It’s so tidy we even do it in the house.
We use the furminator maybe 2-3 times per year, in addition.
I have one of those. He will let me brush one side of his body at a time, and even just half of his mass will create enough fur to fill the palm of my hand. This is with daily brushing, too! He absolutely has denser fur than most cats, which I am assuming is true for your lovely darlings as well. The Furminator is good, but I've found for larger cats that a larger brush is more effective; Lou loves this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZGPI3OY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've had the best results with a big slicker brush. Sorry not American so idk about specific brands to recommend but they look like this. The pins/teeth are really close to each other so it gets the fur even though it's short.
Amazing product. So easy to use and clean. You’ll love it: HERTZKO Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for Dogs and Cats Pet Grooming Dematting Brush Easily Removes Mats, Tangles, and Loose Fur from The Pet’s Coat (Original) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZGPI3OY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_PC5MZEANQQRHSMWH9HKT

From what I understand- this is similar to a Furminator which has a small razor and works to de-shed. It’s not recommended for daily or regular use. A flat brush like this will gather hair as you brush but won’t cut the hair and is better for daily or regular use.
A slicker would probably be the best. Just be gentle with the brush. Honestly if you go to a groomer or have one near by you can ask what they would recommend for your pup. This one is pretty good though! I like that you can retract the bristles and get all that hair out without picking it out.

Something like this, or maybe something with longer bristles? Thanks for your help.

I have been using this one for a few months now. Works great!

I think the self cleaning part is Da Bomb!
I live in Texas too! This is the brush I've been using for my Aussie and found it works pretty well. She actually doesn't mind this one either and will sit still till I'm done with her https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZGPI3OY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I use a slicker brush and comb for my F1b mini bernedoodle and they work great! Super easy to get rid of any tangles and he's brushed often, which makes sure his coat stays tangle-free.

We also have a mini bernedoodle puppy (f1b) and we use a slicker brush and comb. Our groomer said its really important to use both, and we've been brushing him a lot (about 4 times a week to more) to keep his coat smooth, fluffy, and free of tangles. He rarely sheds, and doesn't at all after brushing. At first he hated getting brushed, but with time and treats he got used to it!

You need this top coat brush and this undercoat brush. Source - 110lb German shepherd!
Get an undercoat brush - link here as an example from Amazon.
Also, buy a vacuum that is good for dog hair. A Dyson cordless stick vacuum will make everyday touch up easy. They are wonderful family members so just power thru the shedding (it's not all year) and enjoy the love.
The one I have isn't being sold anymore, but here's a similar one:

Furminator is best for removing hair, but she likes this one for the scratchies.
I have a black and white springer. I use these two on my little girl.

I also use a dematting single sided comb for behind the ears. Mine has a huge amount of hair back there so I use it to thin that hair out when needed. About every 6 weeks.

if only there were room for a human and one of these in this symbiotic relationship
Here's what I use:
slicker brush: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZGPI3OY
undercoat rake: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08ZK4Q3JF
These are the only brushes I've used so I can't tell you if they're best in class. I can however advise you not to go against the grain with the slicker brush. Did it a few times because I thought it'd help. All it did was kink out some of the teeth so the brushing isn't as smooth anymore.
I also hear you on the bath. Next shedding season I'm going to take my girl to a groomer - I saw some vids on how meticulous good groomers are at deep washing to accelerate the shedding. Hopefully it'll help.
I've had great results with this brush. Works far better than the Furminator for my girl.
Congrats! Mine is approaching the 5-month mark... It's a fun time to say the least!
Items she/I have loved so far:
This isn't the brand we have, but we use a brush like this:
Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker Brush https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZGPI3OY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_-3-kBb9C3FSRJ
Doesn't rip his fur, easy to clean, and can do a large section fast.
If it is pure silk, I would probably blend it with another fiber before spinning. If you have carding combs, you can use those to blend it (but it's kind of like responding to someone who said they are just learning to drive oh, well, if you have a Porche...real carding combs are expensive). If you don't have carding combs but are willing to make a small investment, two of these will do nicely: https://www.amazon.com/Hertzko-Self-Cleaning-Slicker-Brush/dp/B00ZGPI3OY/ref=sr_1_6?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1469506762&sr=1-6&keywords=dog+brush
As an added benefit, the "self cleaning" function means you don't have to learn to take your combed fiber off the comb. Downside, they won't card much as a time.
This is much larger and would probably work but the individual tines aren't quite the same shape, so it gets into a more buyer-be-ware territory: https://www.amazon.com/Self-Cleaning--Painless-Cleaning-Stainless-Furniture/dp/B00OS1T65C/ref=sr_1_11?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1469506762&sr=1-11&keywords=dog+brush
Hey! I don't have a woolly puppy; however, I do have a double-coated cute little mutt -- see here -- whom I comb 3-4 times a day.
Here's how I do it (and I am not a specialist). I use 1 brush for the pants and tail (which has coarser hair), e.g. this and 1 tangle-preventing comb, like this for everywhere else. I pay special attention to the areas just around the ears, because my baby gets tangles there. It's also important for me to trim the hair on his belly, on the back of his arms and legs, and his pants (around the tail) about once every six months, when it really gets out of hand (I usually leave the hair at about 6-7cm length when I trim the coat on the belly, and 3cm around the arms and legs, then about 5-6 cm at the pants).
I am in real need of a brush for my two furry babies Quincy and Angie right now I am using a cheap dollar store brush and it doesn't help for their coats. The Pomeranian has a really thick coat and the Maltese easily gets mats. Right now my budget doesnt allow for any extras (I haven't even been able to buy them treats in months) so trying to keep them properly groomed myself to avoid pricey groomer visits.
If you can recommend a different brush that would work just as well and costs less that's even better. Thank you.
I have what we think is a Great Pyr mix (her wisdom panel was submitted last week) but she definitely has pyr-like long flowing fur with a wooly undercoat. I think I own like 5 different brushes/combs, but her favorite and the one that keeps her looking nice are the slickers (I recommend getting one that deposits the fur off of it like this one. To get at the undercoat most efficiently though, my favorite is the Shed Monster. It really gets to that soft wooly undercoat and gets a lot out at a time. The Furminator does okay, but not as well as the Shed Monster in my experience. We do also use an undercoat rake as you mentioned, but I feel like it doesn't do as good of a job of consolidating the fur and kind of gets it all over. Hope this helps!
Edit: Just saw your pup tax. They look just like my girl!
