Ooh and I've heard awesome things about The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (plus the other books in that trilogy). I need to start this one myself.
If you haven't watched The Man in the High Castle on Amazon, or even if you have, you might enjoy the book by Philip K. Dick.
Sorry for my constant additions!
The Golden Compass - Philip Pullman
No one's mentioned the His Dark Materials series yet? You should really check it out! Despite being YA Fiction it really stands out as great work of fiction; the story is epic, and the magical world in which it takes place is beautifully developed. The series mainly follows a young girl named Lyra in a world much unlike our own, except that everyone has a familiar, which more or less is like the representation of their souls. The first book the Golden Compass was turned into a movie of the same name but which does not do the book justice. The real fun starts in the second book of the series where some crazy dimension-jumping stuff happens and the story spills over into OUR OWN world.
I haven't read it since I was a kid but I'd say some of the elements that I thought which made this book really exceptional were it's challenging philosophical ideas, discreet social commentary, the way it really captured the protagonist's 'coming of age', and the fact that some of the characters were talking polar bears. So awesome.
