I'm not sure if this fits the bill, but I purchased this several years ago and, while it is utterly unlike the Silmarillion in that it is lavishly illustrated, the individual historical events are written about in chronological, easy to digest chapters. TIP: This is a book you keep on your coffee table, so don't skimp! Get the hardcover edition (if you get it at all)!
