How to DJ Right is a great book that covers all of the basics in a pretty informative and easy to digest way.

The first thing to know is that it's doing a lot of your own research: crate digging. So, use the search function.

Then, the big four, traktor, serato, rekordbox, and virtualdj, are going to be almost indistinguishable for beginners. Those plus mixxx are great places to start, and mixxx is free. If you want a controller, the ddj-400, ddj-sb3, and mixtrack pro/platinum fx are good starting points, and you can find them decently cheap new, and even cheaper used.

Spotify won't work. Hasn't for over a year. There -are- streaming services that do, like soundcloud go and beatport link, but the vast majority of your music should eventually be high quality (320) mp3s, flacs, wavs, etc. Bandcamp and Juno will be your new favorite friends.

Crossfader , Digital DJ Tips , and Ellaskins are good for the basics, plus some extra techniques. If you're interested in turntablism, scratching and manual live remixing, DJ Angelo has a -great- guide, and the Beat Junkies' Homeroom is good for practice.

"Last night a Dj saved my life" seems like it's more about history, while "How to DJ Right" has some practice tips as well.
