What a coincidence, I've been doing a lot this research for my new home also. :)
That list you linked is based off of B. C. Wolverton's book "How to Grow Fresh Air". http://www.amazon.com/How-Grow-Fresh-Air-Plants/dp/0140262431
He was also the lead scientist on NASA's clean air studies in the 80s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Clean_Air_Study
The book has a lot of great info on not just the list of plants but also care requirements of each one. The plants are ranked on how much the plants clean the air, as well as ease of growth / maintenance, resistance to insect infestation, and transpiration rate (moisture they release into the air).
Keep in mind that if you have pets, you have to make sure the plants are non-toxic.
If you're interested in the nitty gritty here's a more recent study with more plants: http://hortsci.ashspublications.org/content/45/10/1489.full
tl;dr: Tropical palm trees (Areca, Lady) are a great at making air, are pretty easy to take care of, and won't kill your pets. If you live somewhere humid (or don't mind running a humidifier), ferns are even better at removing toxins (also pet safe).
