>Fear is the fence that keeps us stuck in our comfort zones
True.
>So this is it... I have typed up my resignation letter. I am about to throw all caution to the wind and dip in one month.
Why? I can see that go wrong in all sorts of ways. What most people do, is they work towards their new career, while also keeping the old one.
The advantage being that you won't end up with financial issues and you don't lose the part of your identity associated with work without first creating a replacement.
Quitting and then writing is likely going to cause you a lot of mental distress, because it'll be harder than you expect to break into.

One possible market I've heard about (no personal experience), is if you write erotica. At least that's what I've read several times. Think captain kirk fucking aliens. I don't know all the kink markets on Amazon Kindle, but you should be able to investigate how much competition there is in any specific genre.

Be aware that if you rely on others for reassurance, that you are deepening your anxiety and this does look like reassurance seeking to me.
Instead of accepting the uncertainty, you use other people to calm yourself down. That in turn makes it more likely that next time you feel uncertain, you'll feel just as anxious or even more so.
People with high anxiety or OCD frequently ask for reassurance. This is negative behavior that should be stopped. The problem is that by seeking reassurance, you reinforce that you are unable to tolerate the discomfort of the uncertainty and you reinforce that you can fix this by asking. This will make your anxiety worse over time.

Then here's a list of symptoms associated with depression, so you can double check.
Here are a number of things you can do yourself, to improve your depression symptoms:
Often there is a hidden cause for your depression, you might not like yourself or your life. The below advice addresses the symptoms and will reduce them, but you still need to fix the cause. That's the whole point of therapy. With professional guidance, figuring out the causes and then addressing them one by one. If you want to skip that step, you'll have to compensate for it somehow. You should review your life and see if there are any obvious causes for your sadness and find ways to remove them or make them more bearable.
Some people don't know why they are depressed. A common reason is a lack of purpose. To live is to suffer, but it is possible to make that suffering bearable, if you do so while trying to achieve what you want more than anything else. Let me know if you need help to find your purpose in life.
For the below advice, take your phone and set repeating alarm clock reminders, with labels of what to do. Train yourself to either snooze or reschedule the reminders if you can't take action right away, but never to ignore them. The intention is to condition yourself, to build habits, so you will start healing yourself without having to think about it.
Sleep: There is a complex relationship between sleep and depression. When you have days where you don't have to do anything, set an alarm clock. You really don't need more than 7 hours at most per night (a little more if you are under 18). If you can't fall sleep, try taking melatonin one hour before going to bed. It's cheap, OTC and is scientifically proven to help regulate your sleep pattern. Also, rule out sleep apnea. Up to 6% of people have this, but not everyone knows. If you find yourself awake at night, start counting. Don't grab your phone, don't do anything interesting. We're trying to bore you to sleep, not keep you entertained - sometimes it might feel like you've done it for hours and hours, but often it's really not long. Anytime your mind wanders away from the numbers, start over at 1. count at the speed of either your heartbeat or your breathing. Then both Alexa and Google Home can also play a range of sleep sounds if you ask them (rain or other white noise) and there are also free apps for both Android and Apple devices.
Go outside: If you haven't been outside much lately, you might just need some sunlight. 15 minutes two to three times a week is enough. This will fix serotonin levels as well as vitamin D deficiencies.
Meditate: Depressions can be significantly reduced by meditating. The best types Of Meditations For Depression Relief. Your attention is like a muscle. The more you train it, the better the control you have over it. Mindfulness training will help you gain better control over your mind. It doesn't take much effort, just 15 to 20 minutes a day of doing nothing but focus your attention is enough and is scientifically proven to work. As you become better at focusing your attention, it will become easier to force yourself to stop having negative thoughts, which will break the negative reinforcement cycle. Go here for more: r/Meditation
Exercise: The effect of exercise on depressions If you have access to a gym, then start lifting weights. If you don't have access to a gym (or you don't like lifting), start running. If you can't run, then start walking. Just start small. 10 minutes three times a week is fine. You don't have to run fast, just run and then slowly build it up over time. Exercising does several things: It releases endorphins, it takes your mind of your negative thoughts and it will improve your overall health.
Give lots of hugs: Hugs release oxytocin, which improves your mood and relaxes you. So find people to hug. If you are single, hug your parents or friends. If you can't, see if a dog is an option. Most dogs love to hug. Another solution that provides the same benefit is a weighted blanket will provide a similar positive effect at night. You should try to aim for 12 hugs a day (if you currently don't hug a lot, I suggest you slowly build it up over time).
Music: The right music can improve your mood. The genre is not important as long as it is: "Upbeat, rhytmic and energetic". What this means differs from person to person, depending on their music taste. I have a special playlist for this. One way to measure the effectiveness, of the songs is your ability to listen to it over and over (if you can listen to it hundreds of times it likely has the highest positive effect on your mood). The effect can be amplified by using headphones and playing it LOUD and can further be enhanced by closing your eyes (doi:10.1177/0305735617734627, doi:10.1093/jmt/50.3.198 and doi:10.1177/0305735617751050).
You are not your depression: For some people (often those that have been depressed for a long time), their depression has become a part of who they are and they assume a victim role. But that is a big problem, you have to will yourself into someone that sees themselves as a person that is actively fighting their disease, that no longer identifies with it, or else you will unconsciously obstruct your own healing process. As Eckhart Tolle expressed it in A New Earth:
> A very common role is the one of victim, and the form of attention it seeks is sympathy or pity or others' interest in my problems, "me and my story." Seeing oneself as a victim is an element in many egoic patterns, such as complaining, being offended, outraged, and so on. Of course, once I am identified with a story in which I assigned myself the role of victim, I don't want it to end, and so, as every therapist knows, the ego does not want an end to its "problems" because they are part of its identity.

Practice gratitude: Take 5 minutes every day to practice gratitude.

Going to be par for the course where you're going. You want a hard life. Not many people choose a hard life, so they can't tell you how to do it. Keep in mind that writing doesn't really pay anymore (we're all connected to the internet, there's 1 billion English speakers in India, a ton more in Nigeria and those guys can survive on $200 a month, which puts downward pressure on the market, meaning there aren't a whole lot of writing jobs that pay anything), unless you find a niche. It's basically a hobby for 95% of writers.
And an exceptional writer... Those are behemoths, you know. I don't know if you've ever read any biographies of those guys. They're basically processing information non stop. You need to know a lot to be good at it. You're not just competing with all current day writers, you know... you're also directly competing with all the dead ones.
Beyond that, writing is a form of art.
Any form of art is torture of self.
On top of that, it's fun. Most jobs that are fun, have more candidates than the market will support, that means a number of people that will enter the market will have to give up that dream.
The art related degrees generally aren't very useful in other fields. So that means, it's winner takes all, loser enters minimum wage hell.
That means, that in order to succeed, you'll have to find your absolute peak performance, because otherwise you might enter the pool of losers. There's only one way you can find your peak. By going past it, collapsing, and then recovering.
But it's a sliding window. Eventually, you can push further. But where do you stop? So you collapse again. Meanwhile other parts of your life will be neglected and those parts will come knock on your door as well. You will however eventually reach a point where you will be able to sense your impending doom and you'll have reached your maximum potential (or as close to that as you dare to go).
Any mental weakness you have will come out. Be it depression, anxiety or worse. You'll experience it, sooner or later.
Now, I'm not strictly an artist. But I decided long ago that I would do the same thing. Reach my maximum potential, regardless of the price I had to pay. And I did. And it is everything I hoped it would be.
But I had to pay for that and it was expensive. I think you can expect to have to pay the same price, so it doesn't surprise me if you're afraid. You should be.
I think it depends on what kind of person you are, what you should do. Some people have a desire that is greater than themselves to be admired. If that's you, You'll probably have to forge ahead, dangerous as the road may be, avoiding that road, will be even more dangerous.
If you think you can live without admiration, then it's a choice you should make freely.
No risk, no reward. Either go all in and accept the dangers that come with it, understand that it can kill you and that it will probably not be fun the first 15 to 20 years.
If that's a price you think is too high to pay, then I suggest you look for something else to do with your life.

I think that's overly ambitious. All books do is play on the collective unconsciousness. Now you think you can somehow do that without using stereotypes.
It's doable, but only if you intentionally use and subvert those stereotypes. You're just planning to avoid them. Anyway.

One possible market I've heard about (no personal experience), is if you write erotica. At least that's what I've read several times. Think captain kirk fucking aliens. I don't know all the kink markets on Amazon Kindle, but you should be able to investigate how much competition there is in any specific genre.

First, you're about 10 years away from reaching your peak and that's assuming you stick at least 40 hours a week into this.
You can be fairly certain that what you write is shit, unless you're an absolute prodigy. Statistically the odds of that being true are slim.
Second it's impossible to entertain "as many people as possible" for nearly anyone. You'll need to find a way to somehow be very mainstream, yet extremely attractive. There are almost no writers that can do that successfully.
Third, I don't know man... How much of my time to give to you. I can explain all sorts of ways to be successful and for all I know you read the first couple of lines above this one, realized how hard it's going to be and you turned around and turned your PS4 back on. If you want to be exceptional in a world where 7 billion people are competing for a limited amount of attention, you're going to have to run really, really hard to get anywhere. I don't know if you have the ability to change your mind in a way to do that and more importantly, I don't know if you have the willingness to do that.
