If English is your first/second language, then I would read something like the NIV/NRSV/NASB/ESV. All of these are modern English translations (with some stylistic and theological adaptations). If English is not your first language, and you nevertheless want to readi in English, try the ERV (Easy-to-Read Version) or Bible in Simple English. Otherwise, find the primary translation of whatever language is your first language. As for English, I would not read the KJV for ease of read as the language is more archaic. Using web tools like BibleGateway.com is also an easy way to compare translations side-by-side.
If you're trying to get the jist of the Bible/biblical books, I would pick up How to Read the Bible Book by Book on Amazon as it does a good job of helping readers to understand the structure, background, and main points of biblical books. Getting a sense of metathemes/narratives is important to understanding the Bible and this will help with that.
