1. Using Word, or any other word processor, you MUST use paragraph styles for all the text, and use them consistently. If you just do ad hoc formatting with the toolbar tools, you will end up with a supreme code mess. Edit the styles to make your paragraphs look as you want them to, if necessary. The font you will have to embed when you convert to an ebook format--that is a whole complicated subject. Hint: convert to epub FIRST, then use Calibre or Sigil to edit any glitches in the ebook. Amazon will want an epub from you anyway...they do their own conversion to their formats. Forget page structure--ebooks don't have any (unless you do a fixed-format ebook, and good luck with that!).
2. Add images with the add image tool, don't drag and drop. Use high quality images, but not huge ones...think reader screen size and resolution. DO NOT convert to pdf first, convert to epub. PDF will kill all your formatting and you can never cleanly convert back out of pdf to epub or any other format. PDF is for printing on paper, period. Check your images in an epub editor after conversion. If you use Calibre to convert, set the output format to "tablet", so it will not resize any images. Or, best, just add the images using the epub editor, where you can control everything.
3. Page size means nothing to an ebook. The text flows to match the screen size and font size the user selects. To best see what you will get on an ebook reader screen at the end of the day, use a page size similar to an ereader screen, like 3.5 x 5 inches for a standard kindle. If you compose on A4, it will look NOTHING kike that on an ereader.
