How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile... And 18 Mistakes to Avoid: Updated for 2020 (15th Edition)
> So, did you guys network during school?
I've literally been people networking since I was 15, when I went to my first 2600 (https://www.2600.com) meeting. I got 2 of my internships that helped paid for college through people I knew at 2600. I got my first, second, and third job from people I knew from 2600. I got a bunch of other jobs through people I knew at NANOG (https://www.nanog.org)
People networking IMHO is crucial to finding a job.
Some tips:
HTH.
Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. Also, here are a bunch of tips I wrote in another post on finding a job through people networking:
What isn't on MeetUp.com, web search for IT user groups that aren't using MeetUp (most are though.)
What products in IT do you like? For example, I go to a Cisco user group, a Palo Alto Networks user group, Linux user groups, etc (pre-COVID19.)
Do you have an idea that you think you could present to an IT con, like ShmooCon, or NANOG, or DefCon, etc? It's not just who you know, it's also WHO KNOWS YOU. If you have an idea that gets accepted, put in a slide of your presentation that says,"Hey, you looking for a <whatever you are in IT>? I'm available for hire, please feel free to talk to me after this presentation or email me at [](mailto:)" That way you potentially have 500+ more people who will see your presentation, many of them are worker bees who know of a job in their company that is hiring, and a lot of times even hiring managers are in the audience.
Find Slack, Discord, and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) servers / channels that are in your IT interests. You can easily do a web search for them, or ask on Reddit. Talk to people online, help people with problems, and you'll make online friends. I literally got a job once because I complained on IRC I was just laid off. Someone I knew from 2600 then privately messaged me, and it went from there. For example - https://www.reddit.com/r/devops/comments/nu6361/looking_to_join_devops_slack_channels/
Make personal business cards and hand them out post-COVID19. It's awkward handing out resumes for yourself and for the other person.
If you don't already have a LinkedIn profile, you should make one. Then SEO the crap out of your profile it using this book. I went from maybe one recruiter a week pinging to a recruiter pinging me every single day. How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile...
