I use this with my iPad
HyperDrive iPad Pro USB C Hub Adapter 6-in-1 Dongle, USB-C 3.0 PD 60W, 4K60Hz HDMI, Audio Jack, SD/MicroSD, USB-A Compatible with iPad Pro Air 2020 2019 2018, M1 iPad Pro 2021, Space Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QWP3F3C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_X42R8GKYBNK9SB9H15CN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Put the card in, connect my SSD, then use the files app to copy straight from the card to the drive. There must be something similar with a lightning connection to plug into the iPhone. If not, just add a usb-c to lightning adapter as well.
I have this, that I like.

Mainly bought this particular one for the SD card readers and headphone jack. Charges just fine via USB-C, but there’s only one C port, so it’s either charge OR data but not both at the same time. I just use the A port for data if I need to charge while using. Not that big of a deal for me.
I just picked up a HyperDrive hub for mine & it’s pretty great if you have a need for some extra connectivity. Gives you USB A & C, SD & microSD, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Personally, I’d only buy the HyperDrive brand as opposed to the half priced Chinese knock-offs. I’ve read multiple instances of the others not working correctly (or at all) and even damaging the iPad. I wouldn’t risk it. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers!!
You’d probably have to just let it dangle then. I have the Hyperdrive, it has attachments that come off so that you can get the right fit if you prefer for it to be flush with a case and not have anything dangling down off the side. Ive had it for about a month mainly for importing photos and have had no complaints. Also can charge through it.
I’m going to use compressed. I personally don’t see much difference between compressed and uncompressed.
As for culling, I don’t really do it. I’m not shooting hundreds/thousands of photos that need to be deleted. I just do some travel and landscape photography. If I take a few pictures here or there that aren’t great, oh well. My workflow is:
I have tried both Darkroom and Pixelmator Photo. I didn’t like Darkroom so much. Mostly the way they’ve implemented curves and some of the other sliders. Also it doesn’t work with compressed raws.
I very much like Pixelmator Photo, however 1) it doesn’t work with compressed, which I could live with, but 2) it’s quite limited. Just tone, lighting, contrast, color. Sure, it’s got those basic things and it does those well, however it doesn’t have some other basic things like a clarity or white point slider. Their Highlights reduction is good, but could be better. The developers are great, very active and responsive on their forums answering questions and responding to feature requests, but it seems like all their resources are being focused on Pixelmator Pro for Mac (Photoshop/Affinity competitor) and Pixelmator Photo seems like they treat it as an afterthought, just doing some basic things to keep people interested but not actually building and implementing the features that are so highly being requested. If the day comes when they implement masking and local adjustments I would likely start using that again.
I have the HyperDrive USB hub that I use with my iPad Pro 2020 and it works great for MIDI and audio out to my headphones.

Believe it or not all hubs are created equally. Especially when it comes to interfacing music gear. From data transfer speeds to power it varies and it’s not something that the makers disclose.
Back to hubs…
I’ve used the Hyperdrive 6-1 w/o any issues since I flashed it to V2 firmware.

In your situation I would use this: the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. USB-C port to pass thru power as well as a USB port for your keyboard.
Or this hub that is sold by the Apple Store if you want something similar to what you have.
The only other thing I can think of is that you might want to make sure you have background processing enabled on the apps you are using.
There's a lot of hubs that would fit your description since you prefer it with a cable and the ESR case has an ample opening for cables. I don't know how many USB 3.0 ports you're looking for, but Hyperdrive fits your description (with 1 USB port), has cable, can be used without cable: https://www.amazon.com/HyperDrive-Adapter-Dongle-Charging-Headphone/dp/B07QWP3F3C/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=HyperDrive+for+iPad+Pro&qid=1599390408&sr=8-3
