I spent 6 months full time in a nub, it's a great device. I personally am biased against metal because the weight of it gives me weird sensory issues but some people swear by it. Ultimately you'll have to just try stuff until you find what works best for you. Oh, and my personal rec for a good strap is this one. I've used it on both the nub and my current device and it's super comfy and the elastic is nice.
I actually found the shoestring trick to be pretty uncomfortable because I don't find the feeling of shoestrings against my skin very comfortable. I did however get a strap that does the same thing and it has been a game changer for nights/wakeups.
A strap would help a lot. You can use a shoelace but for long term comfort I would suggest buying one. I bought this one from Amazon and it has made nights, and more importantly early mornings completely discomfort free. This morning for whatever reason I woke up and had taken my strap off at some point in the night and sure enough I woke up sore, so for me at least the strap is a god send.

Big metal devices can be really heavy and slide down / pull and be generally really annoying. I suggest getting an adjustable strap like this and attaching it to the base ring. to help support it.

It's super comfortable to wear. Stretchy, yet snug and does a great job at keeping the cage close to your body even when you get hard.

The rings are detachable. Snaps make it easy to put on and take off. It's elastic but not too tight. All around winner, IMO.
