Inland Premium is the only way to go for plotting. Plenty of TBW, and roughly the same speed as any other NVME using the Phison E12 controller.
Take my advice and don’t do an external SSD. Yes it’s more money…but I used to use an external SSD for years and it’s cumbersome and quite annoying. Prices on internal SSD nvme have come down. Just make sure you get a good one. I’d recommend a 2TB if your doing gaming specifically this one I have and it’s excellent:
Inland Premium 2TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 TLC 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive, Read/Write Speed up to 3200MB/s and 2900MB/s, 3200 TBW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X74M6PT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_692D1RHMY07DQR9QKBHT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Inland Premium 2TB. Unfortunately it's sold out now that everyone knows about it. I managed to grab 4 from Microcenter over the past couple of weeks, but the 3 stores near me don't even have it listed anymore.
A drive that fails within weeks or a couple of months is a defective item and is not representative of ssds or that product in general. In this case however, it seems that Amazon or Microcenter might be selling B-stock(previously returned items) as if it were new. And that B-stock most likely were defective items that they didn't properly test for defects.
A better option might be the Inland Premium which is slightly more expensive but there aren't as many complaints of drive failures.
You’ll also benefit from getting an NVME drive as your boot drive (instead of a SATA drive like the 860 Pro. Also, that drive is 2.5 years old)
Consider the Inland Premium 2TB
https://www.amazon.com/Inland-Premium-Internal-Solid-State/dp/B07X74M6PT
Inland Premium 2tb nvme for $230...3200tbw rated.
The inland premium is much much better plus endurance is 3600TBW
https://www.amazon.com/Inland-Premium-Internal-Solid-State/dp/B07X74M6PT
For comparison, the Seagate Expansion Card is rated at a 2400Mb/s speed, you can get an Inland Premium 2TB with a read speed of up to 3200Mb/s for $270, or a WD Black SN750 up to 3400Mb/s for $230, but even a Gen4 Samsung 980 Pro goes for $360 with a speed up to 7000Mb/s
That is the lower spec TBW model, these ones are 3200TBW. https://www.amazon.com/Inland-Premium-Internal-Solid-State/dp/B07X74M6PT or https://www.microcenter.com/product/608649/inland-premium-2tb-ssd-m2-2280-pcie-nvme-30-x4-tlc-3d-nand-internal-solid-state-drive,-read-write-speed-up-to-3200-mbps-and-2900-mbps,-3200-tbw
Another anecdotal data point (2 parallel on ramdisk, 4 parallel on nvme, 1 on j (a 2TB 7200RPM SATA drive):

There are still some good consumer grade SSDs available. I personally have an Inland Premium 2TB with 3200TBW specified (https://www.amazon.com/Inland-Premium-Internal-Solid-State/dp/B07X74M6PT). Can vouch for its decent speed and endurance. Checkout https://chiadecentral.com/best-consumer-m-2-nvme-ssds-for-plotting/ for other models recommended as well.
Whatever was done automatically and through the Razer website. The only two I saw there were the BIOS update and the EC Driver update. Nothing else.

I figured it might be the SSD. It does run with it but won't boot a clone off of it. It does do a clean boot but won't add drivers. I have this:

Samsung is on sale right now and I could try it out. Didn't feel like waiting until the 4th to get it though.
Inland Premium 2TB SSD 3D NAND TLC M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive, Read/Write Speed up to 3200MB/s and 2900MB/s, 3200 TBW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X74M6PT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lDDBFbBJR8MVG
Is this the correct TLC version?

The reviews are near-perfect. WTF are you going on about.

ANYWAYS, moving on....
