The wedge pillow is seriously worth its weight in gold. It made both sleeping and getting into/out of bed really easy and comfortable. I got this one but I think if you poke around amazon you can find cheaper ones. The 12" height is key though!
A couple of things: A recliner helps me a lot. But make sure it's one that encourages him to sit with a straight back. If he prefers his bed, he might like a wedge pillow. Either the long or short side can go on the mattress with the other side against the headboard, giving him two possible angles to try.
for pillows, a mastectomy pillow was very helpful in the first week but I haven't used it afterwards. it can also be used in the car.
I got a wedge pillow to sleep on (and stacked another layer of pillows on top of it so I could sit up more) and that's been very helpful with sleeping on my back since that's not how I normally sleep.
I’m able to do all pulling motions with no pain, some pushing motions currently over head press is the easiest. Then because of the location of my tear I struggle heavily with pain, I can press 95 pounds for 3 before it gets painful (previous bench 365) mine was torn from the 8:00-10:00. Also I highly recommend getting a wedge pillow (like this for example https://www.amazon.com/InteVision-Foam-Bed-Wedge-Pillow/dp/B009HHLBKK) because thats what helps you sleep at night with the sling.
I used a wedge pillow like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009HHLBKK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_YMWZFb713GDQH
and a memory foam neck pillow that fastens. I would fasten it shut when sleeping and sometimes would use a pillow on top of the wedge pillow. I also put a pillow under my legs/knees.
the neck pillow was the most annoying thing for me but I didn't want to mess up my nose so I think the determination helps. I am a side sleeper, but now that I no longer need to sleep elevated or on my back, I like the wedge pillow and still use it to get more used to sleeping on my back.
I got this wedge pillow from amazon and it has been good. I didn’t actually use it much after my surgery since I found I preferred being on my back. However, I used it all through my pregnancy and I use it for reading a lot and it is still in great shape and not all squished down!
I sleep sitting up. I could not handle sleeping on my side, and do not like the idea of the machine; so sleeping reclined it is. Not diagnosed because that costs monies, but I do snore very loud, and wake up tired. Lately I have been waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom which can be a sign as well. Sleeping reclined has helped quite a bit. I feel better during the day and do not feel like I am going to fall asleep at work or in traffic.
Happy to :)
While we always enjoyed doggy style we do a lot more of it these days.
Also, we picked up a wedge pillow (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009HHLBKK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01) and it has been fun. My wife can lay on her back with it under her hips and it is great as it raises her hips and it changes the angle that I enter her and where I hit internally. It also allows us to maintain eye contact. ;) It's also a great position for me to give her oral as I can go for up to an hour without getting a sore neck.
She also likes to lay face down on it with it under her hips. Very similar to doggy but it's a lot easier on her arms.
We love to spoon but entering her while spooning is difficult now. We've compensated by spooning from the waist down which allows penetration and I can still touch her back, arms and face, maintaining a level of connection.
I think the final one that we enjoy is where she lays on her back and I lay on my side next to her, maybe at a 45 degree angle. She raises her leg closest to me, I slide my top leg under her raised leg and extend so that lies on top of or next to her other leg. This allows us me to enter her and get really deep into her.
Another one that we've added is where she lays on her side and moves her top leg forward with her lower leg running parallel to her lower leg. I then straddle her lower leg and slide into her. It's ok for us. I mention it as it's worth trying and I know experiences vary by person.
If I wasn't clear or descriptive enough let me know and I'll try to clarify.
Oh, and one more thing... We added a Hitatchi magic wand and she loves having a non-penetrative vibrator.
I bought this about 6 months ago, and its been awesome. Finally got sick of stacking all those pillows.
I also do some vicks vapor rub every night, which seems to help me breath better.
Bed wedges! They are amazing. I've had really bad acid reflux for over 10 years now, the kind that makes you run to the er because it feels like someone is ripping your chest open, and wedges are a huge help! I have been sleeping on one every night for 8 months now and my night time symptoms are almost nonexistent. Here's an example of one http://www.amazon.com/InteVision-Wedge-Pillow-Quality-Removable/dp/B009HHLBKK/ref=zg_bs_3775471_1
Liberator has foam ramps:
and look there's a 30 % off sale this weekend!!! With the code GOBIG

this is the wedge...I think it would be great for you guys, since you're beginners -- If you scroll down, there's a scrolling bar of sex positions that they recommend with the wedge... the standing ovation will likely work well for you guys! The elevated wheel barrow ... really I'm betting the wedge will help you tons.
If you don't want to pay 90 for this pillow, there's this: https://www.amazon.com/InteVision-Wedge-Pillow-Quality-Removable/dp/B009HHLBKK/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1467501998&sr=8-1&keywords=sex+position+pillow
on amazon. its 40 bucks.. however I can't attest to quality, since I don't own it.
On stretching... this is pretty big, especially for women as having wider, more open access will make penetration easier for you and more pleasurable for her. Obviously, she doesn't need to be doing the splits here. But I agree that a little bit of extra flexibility will help a ton. Doing a little bit of stretching during foreplay will also help keep those muscles from cramping up ;)
$40 shipped on Amazon.

I'm a back sleeper who loathes side sleeping. I also tried a pregnancy body pillow (one of those U-shaped ones) and it did not help.
I finally got this wedge pillow as recommended by another back sleeping BabyBumper https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B009HHLBKK. It elevates your top half so that you shouldn't have issues with the baby cutting off your circulation (which is the concern with back sleeping).
Not sure if this wedge will be the right thing for you, but in general, try looking up different pillow shapes to see which might suit your tastes. Some configurations with additional pillows for feet elevation might be especially nice for your back.
Hope you feel better soon, I'm in the same boat.
No it alleviated my back pain-they are normally used for spine surgery patients haha. I have not great posture, am a rather top-heavy woman, and have a shitty office chair so my back was always kinda achy but sleeping on the wedge really helped that.
this is the pillow I have and this pillowcase, I know they sell them other places and different sizes/inclines but not sure what the benefit of different ones is. The biggest hurdle is learning to sleep with your head close to the top of the pillow instead of just sleeping at the bottom. I also sometimes flip it so the bottom (that normally lays on the bed) is up against my headrest with the skinny part of the wedge pointing up-if that makes any sense- which is a comfy support to lean against to read or watch tv in bed
Yay!!! Congratulations! I had only 3 days of notice before heading into surgery, so I had to get myself ready quickly as well. Here are some of the things that I needed right away:
-Some people do pregnancy pillows, but I LOVED having a wedge pillow. I got this one off of Amazon and I piled extra pillows on top of it to be propped up farther (less swelling). I still use it almost 3mPO! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009HHLBKK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
-A tumbler cup with a bent/curved straw was SO helpful, because the extra work to sit up to reach a complete vertical straw felt like a giant task in the first two weeks PO
-I don't share a bed with someone, so I designated one side of the bed for me to sleep, and then I had a basket on the other side (like a $5 plastic basket from target) that I put things that I would need to be easily accessible. Especially since reaching will not be easy. I kept my water glass in there, cough drops, tissues, ibuprofen, my glasses, stuff like that!
-Having extra pillows to place under each arm and under my knees was a GIFT. it helped me to stay on my back and stay comfortable while I slept.
-Try to bring some dishes, cups, and snacks down to counter top or an easy to access level so that you can get food without the assistance of someone else.
- I would find out if the surgeon is providing you with post-op surgical bras! Mine did, but I know plenty of facilities have you get them yourself.
-I second the gatorade comment below! That was really helpful in the first few days
Have you asked for more pain medication? I ended up getting a refill for my hydrocodone, and it was the only thing that would allow me to sleep.
Also, I'd recommend getting this foam wedge:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009HHLBKK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It comes with a tiny pillow and I slept with this for 3 months. Probably a lot longer than I should have, but after a few weeks or so I was completely comfortable while sleeping elevated and didn't want to get rid of the wedge.
I used this one. I bought it a while ago to read in bed and it came handy post-surgery.
I got this one and then make sure you get a pillowcase for it too! I bought four years ago and it’s still holding up great
Hey, surgery can be easy or terribly difficult depending on your pre op damage and the skill of your surgeon. I had 4 operations for this. First two surgeries were a disaster and I got worse. I had redos on both sides with Dr. Donahue in Boston and I’m getting much better. Best wishes for you...
1) you absolutely need a wedge pillow. You won’t be able to lay flat on your back for at least a month. I bought this one, it was cheaper when I bought it. I really like this one and I still use it. InteVision Foam Bed Wedge Pillow (25" x 24" x 12") & Headrest Pillow in ONE Package - 2" Memory Foam Top - Helps Relief for Acid Reflux, Post Surgery, Snoring, and Back Pain https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009HHLBKK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_75.dEbWAQP1M6
Here is another that looks good for cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KKPKOFK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xZ.dEbXX2JEF7
2) Tiger Balm Sport Rub Pain... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000N5WT2O?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
3) you need different supplements that will help your nerves recover. Vitamins B12, fish oil etc... Simply Nature's Pure Alpha Lipoic... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EIMRXQE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Acetyl L-Carnitine Capsules... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XF7K9MM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share MAV Nutrition Omega 3 Fish Oil... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBTJFJB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
4) FIVE S FS8801-BLK Deep Tissue 3D... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GWGA1OU?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
5) Yosager Trigger Point Self... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073W6RTXJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
6) some types of ice packs and a heating pad. The ice packs at my local Walmart were not so good but you can shop on Amazon. I got mine from my Dad’s house. You can get a small heating pad from the Walmart and some ice packs on amazon.
7) Make sure you have a pain pill plan discussed with your surgeon. I took narcotics for 2 months after the first surgery and after the second one I got so bad I stayed on pain management for a year until after my redos. I’m just now getting off the pain pills... again I was terribly unlucky as I chose local inexperienced surgeons for my first two and they really messed me Up. The whole world depends on the skill and experience of the surgeon.
8) Facebook has some excellent support groups. Much more active than here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/TOSSupportGroup/?ref=share
There is another one with more people but I got banned for arguing with the moderators. You can type thoracic outlet syndrome in the google search and look at the groups.
These are the top things that really helped me to recover and be comfortable.
Message me if you have any questions
Yes! When one (car) door closes, another opens ;)
This is the wedge pillow I got but it was cheaper when I got it (~$25) - I think any wedge pillow could work, or you can get one that's designed for a single leg - just make sure you can use it with your leg fully extended.
This is the bed desk I got - I used it a lot for the first few days, but then I was able to move myself to a desk. I guess I should probably still use it when I'm on my laptop in bed but I don't... my laptop doesn't have any issues overheating and I feel like it just gets in the way sometimes.
We've enjoyed this one.
