I have one of these. It works well for grilling temps, but It's not great for low & slow cooks. Got myself a smaller one since. It's not quite as fast or dramatic, but it's easy to light the coals correctly for any cook I want to do.
My biggest problem with chimney starters is they smoke like an SOB for the first few minutes.
I've used firestarter blocks, chimney starters, and other methods with my Kamado Joe. I finally settled on something I really like:

It's basically a mini flamethrower -- so it's fun to use -- and it gets my fire going in about 30 seconds. LOVE it.
Be sure to use hardwood charcoal and if you've never smoked before I'd start by cooking a pork butt / pork shoulder. They are pretty cheap and VERY forgiving. There are TONS of videos on YouTube telling you how to cook one. Also, be sure to check out the ones from Smoking Dad BBQ. He focuses on the Kamado Joe:

The one I mentioned is a happy medium.
I recently got this one and I'm very happy with the results.
