I've got the Garmin 530 MTB bundle but instead of the handlebar mount, I use a K-Edge Gravity Cap Mount.
I've used the map function on trails I'm unfamiliar with, but rarely use it on my local trails since I know them well enough. I tried using the navigation mode while riding unfamiliar trails, but it's impossible to look at the Garmin while riding.
I mainly use it for connecting my various sensors on all my bikes (road, commuter, and MTB) to gather data when I ride.

I made my own. I used one of these, and extended it out about an inch and a half from the mounting point so that it would clear my rear tire. It's been really solid, and is holding tight. I used loctite on the threads so that it doesn't vibrate loose over time.
