I settled on the Kasa by TP link products. Wall switch variety is good, dimmers, 3 way, on off. I also use the duplex plug Smart Plug Mini. All works with Smartthings.
I found that the TP Link stuff to be good quality for a fair price
According to the description on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-HS220-Dimmer-Switch-1-Pack/dp/B079775ZZQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1543021969&sr=8-2&keywords=TP-Link+HS220
The TP-Link HS220 does not work in a 3 way. You need to get a 3 way capable switch.

Kasa Smart Single Pole Dimmer Switch by TP-Link (HS220) - Neutral Wire and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection Required, Dimmer Light Switch for LED Lights, Works with Alexa and Google Home, UL Certified, 1-Pack
yes. you need 2 "3-way" switches. the "way" is +1 of the # of switches. This one works great, it's a toggle, so it always stays in the same position. it's also a dimmer, but if these aren't dimmer lights, use the app to set to "instant" on
Lutron Caseta is a high-quality bulletproof system for your whole home. Starting with one switch is a great way to get in.
If you only really want to do one switch then there are some less expensive options like the TP Kasa link switches, that also work well. https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-HS220-Dimmer-Switch-1-Pack/dp/B079775ZZQ
Well that’s a real bummer considering I bought 3 of these. This is the dimmer switch I bought. Limited-time deal: Kasa Smart HS220 Dimmer Switch by TP-Link, Single Pole, Needs Neutral Wire, Wi-Fi Light Switch for LED Lights, Works with Alexa and Google Assistant, UL Certified, 1-Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079775ZZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_dlT1_W98XJ6C3JF6VM2C37EEZ I don’t see any that are made for the setup I have that dim.
We have these at the house and they’re wonderful. “Hey google, dim the living room lights 50%”
And it works. It’s fun. (They also have an app that controls everything. Great products from that company (Kasa)

Edit: it still has buttons, not a dimmer slider; but, I never really use them because the app and using google home is much easier.
Well I ran into this while looking.. i present you the HS220 (not yet available)

these are "fairly" idiot proof.

-- i do realize they're building better idiots every day.
The only dimmers that will work offline (no WiFi or internet) is a smart dimmer switch like the TP Link Kasa HS220.
It does, yes. If you are looking for something without a hub, rather than getting smart bulbs, you could get smart switches or dimmers. I know the Kasa stuff are low cost options that don't require hubs.
Hey , I was wondering if you can help me out. Basically, I have a dumb fan that I would like to work on.
Are you saying I can use a dual setup for each? I would like a dimmer for lights (I changed the bulbs to dimmable) and fan control with speed.
https://www.amazon.com/Kasa-Smart-HS220-Certified-Required/dp/B079775ZZQ (for light control).
and
https://www.amazon.com/Kasa-Smart-HS200P3-Certified-Required/dp/B07HGW8N7R (for the fan) , no speed control and direction control, and currently, I am fine with that.

Would something like this work? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079775ZZQ/ref=ox\_sc\_saved\_title\_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

One consideration is that they need a neutral wire in the box.

I'm assuming something like this should work?

I've never tried their dimmer switches but I have multiple regular and a couple three way switches.

Great suggestions.
I'm also a big fan of dusk-til-dawn lighting on the outside of my house. That is based on a friend who owns a security company who came to my house to quote a camera system saying that he wouldn't do anything until I figured out how to make that happen. Every entrance to your house should be lit up!
Depending on how many switches you have and your DIY savviness, it can be very cheap to set up a dusk-til-dawn schedule. Here are two good options:
Despite the higher cost, I chose #2 for my house. I didn't want to have an internet outage affect anything. (I installed the Kasa switch for an interior room for other purposes). Note that for both options, you need a neutral wire in your switch box (check before you buy). I'd recommend not using a simple timer switch - it will come on too late in winter and too early in summer.
I also absolutely agree on the wattage: replace every single bulb with an LED. These bulbs will be on for ~12 hours per day * 365 days / year so you should be willing to spend on a lower wattage LED. (Details: 120 W * 12 hours/day * 365 days / year * $0.12/kWh = $63.07 / year per lightbulb. A 15W LED would only be $7.88 -- more than justifying the extra LED price within the first year). Also, make sure you have enough lumens to properly light the area so don't be afraid to go bigger on the equivalent wattage. Try to buy the bulbs at a local store where state-mandated discounts on the LEDs are automatically applied (true for VA and MD).
Finally, for aesthetics sake, pay attention to the color temperature of the bulbs that you are buying for the front of your house. I like 2700K (which is "warmer"), but whatever your preference is buy bulbs of all the same color temperature. Otherwise, your house will look a bit weird.
Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but i have the Kasa Dimmer by TP-Link and it's connected up to my google home without any fuss. Can yell at google to turn the "kitchen lights to 10%" and have it hooked up to my "goodnight" routine, to shut off the kitchen lights

If you can’t figure that out, you could ignore that and replace the switch with on that’s controllable through Google assistant

Just want to narrow down the hypothetical to the pairing of these two devices. As to why, while I am sold on primarily using smart switches and dumb bulbs versus smart bulbs and a myriad of pseudo switch replacements, there are SOME use cases in my house where I would want the flexibility of having multicolor if it was not too painful.
What I was describing above would be a scenario that would be pleasant for me -- using switches most of the time with no downside, and when I do want smart bulb capabilities, in those particular fixtures, I can do so when the light is already on. It would be OK, then, that when I turn off the light at the switch, I can no longer control the bulb itself. It's not perfect, but totally doable. I was then trying to see how ambitious I could be with regard to still having a physical dimmer. It sounds like it's a crapshoot, but might be worth testing for me if the worst case scenario is a blown bulb...

Looks like the only dimmers are switches. https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Wi-Fi-Switch-Dimmer-TP-Link/dp/B079775ZZQ
Yeah, your thinking of it wrong. Just get a switch like a Kasa dimmer wall switch. That will give you voice control for on/off and dimmer to different percentage amounts. I use both, but in diff places in the house. They aren’t the cheapest, but sure works great when your wife wants the two dinning room chandeliers each with 8 candle bulbs to be able to dim.
