I’m also fighting the little bastards. I first tried Apple cider vinegar, but that didn’t seem to work. Switched to cheap wine and that worked better. I’ve also had luck with a combination of sweet vermouth and simple syrup. The best solution was buying a Katchy insect trap from Amazon. YMMV.
The vinegar/dish soap trap works pretty well, but IMO I've had those fuckers breed faster than they get caught in the trap. So it catches a lot but there's still plenty more flying around. Bought one of these things in the spring and it's been a lifesaver. The light really draws them in. The amount of flies on the pad like every day is revolting.
Letting soild dry out completely between watering and then bottom watering to keep the top inches of soil dry. The larvae hatch and come from the top inch or two usually. Also, this fan/light has been a LIFE saverkatchy
We have something like this:
Katchy Indoor Fly Trap - Catcher & Killer for Mosquito, Gnat, Moth, Fruit Flies - Non-Zapper Traps for Buzz-Free Home - Catch Flying Insect Indoors with Suction, Bug Light & Sticky Glue (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_SM1RS16SKQY8MQHZW7B9?psc=1
Oh my god this is why I had to give in and buy a Katchy and I love it so much. So satisfying to see those mofos stuck there in the morning.
Lol a fruit fly, or maybe a gnat, either way you already have the solution to it. Those stickies are pretty effective. Almost any plant is gonna have that problem at one point in their life. It’s very common. The eggs are in the soil, so there’s no point in buying any sprays to kill. You can just keep using those stickies, if your problem is really bad you can add additional ones or something like this to augment the control management. They go away after a few life cycles if you have enough traps to prevent breeding
I use a catchy or whatever from Amazon. It has a uv light and sticky pad it sucks them down on to. Doesn't do much for regular flies, but for some reason the little fuckers go for it. Literally the only thing I've ever found that works, and I've tried everything over the years.
This is the one I have, not that I would recommend that brand specifically but it works rather well at managing the infestation. And Lmaoo that’s so funny they do look fun to play with 😂
KATCHY Indoor Insect and Flying Bugs Trap Fruit Fly Gnat Mosquito Killer with UV Light Fan Sticky Glue Boards No Zapper Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_pM5aGbEZAHR73?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Best thing I could have possible bought for fruit flies and other sorts of insects.
I splurged on a fly trap with a black light to attract bugs and fan that sucks them in.
There are natural solutions, of course. I just don’t want saucers of vinegar stinking up my house.
My guess is it's not the plant, it's the window. If you notice it's not a 2m circle it's a rectangle under the window. They're attracted to UV light, it's how this thing works. They'll keep hitting the window until they die. I've cleaned up a ton of them from my own windows when we've had issues in the past.
Yes but im the only one in my family they bite. Super annoying bc im the only one concerned about leaving the screen door open.

Cant help you outside, but if you put this one next to where you hang out it might catch some. Four of them were eating me alive in my living room and it caught them!
This trap works great for fungus gnats.
I thought I was the only one that was getting infested with these f*ckers! I bought one of those bug trap fans from Amazon and run it at night in my bedroom, It catches them on sticky paper and it's literally filled with these mosquitos in a few nights. Has helped quite a bit,.

Not sure if you’re still having this issue, but I bought this off Amazon and it has worked significantly. Killed all the flies that kept creepin in, love it.
Check your AC. We had issues with ours and it took a week to fix. In the meantime the humidity in the house had gotten pretty bad. That's when we started seeing these bugs. Every time we think we have it handled they pop up again.
I think /u/BrisklyBrusque is right that they're midges. We've been using fly strips, a couple of Katchies and I think we're at the tail end of it all.
We got a countertop bug zapper similar to this one that might help between now and cleaning the disposal:
I got one of these off amazon and almost all the bugs that used to drive me nuts are gone. I also have a studio apartment so 1 was good enough for me, your mileage may vary

I have used peroxide before and it didn't kill the gnats. I even tested it by putting gnat larvae on a shelf, pouring peroxide on them and watching if they died. They did not. I also used mosquito bits to water my houseplants with and that didn't kill them. So I got this device from Amazon and haven't had gnat issues since. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_BT32SQ5B5CGQ81VG2G0V?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
get one of these bitches, they get attracted to the pretty purple light, get sucked into a fan and then starve to death. great torture device would recommend
This is what got rid of mine. My gf grows lots of plants and it is always an issue so she got me this thing called Katchy https://www.amazon.com/Original-Indoor-Insect-Trap-KATCHY/dp/B07B6RZP4H And it took care of any gnats near my stuff. It's a def a good idea to pause and take care of the problem . Good luck!
I’ve found these to be a great supplement to the tripes/gnats Catcher
My 50+ plants in the apartment seem to breed these guys, so we finally bought this contraption called Katchy. Sounds insane, but for $40 on Amazon it was hands down the best purchase. First night it caught over 30 and a mosquito! It's plugged in and runs all the time like a white noise machine/night light combo!

This is the exact one I have. I’m not sure what the bad reviews say but it’s definitely not for flies and I don’t have a fruit fly problem. It’s caught a few moths and I haven’t had any welts since getting it.
I use a Katchy, and it works great for all types of flying insects indoors. My Mom has one too and hers gets a good amount of mosquitoes. Good luck! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm\_sw\_em\_r\_mt\_dp\_ENJ4C61RDHTHGJ074FMX?\_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Maybe I need a bigger fan, haha! My tower fan doesn’t seem to keep them at bay. I now key my bathroom light on with the door cracked. That seems to distract them a bit. I was looking at zappers but wasn’t sure if they would get annoying. I think I just found a zapper alternative which has a small light and a fan that sucks them in.

I don’t think the hum would bother me. I’m used to my fan and other wild noises living downtown haha. However you mentioned the light being unhealthy?
Also suggest checking out the Katchy (you can get it from Amazon). That, plus mosquito bits, yellow sticky traps, and bottom watering helped me get my fungus gnat problem under control!
Just bought one of these, mostly for fruit flies, but I'm interested to see if it gets them as well:

Using this in Tucson. Works well, but you may need more than one Katchy Indoor Fly Trap - Catcher & Killer for Mosquito, Gnat, Moth, Fruit Flies - Non-Zapper Traps for Buzz-Free Home - Catch Flying Insect Indoors with Suction, Bug Light & Sticky Glue (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_K1VKR08FQXJ7PYWEJJKW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Obviously, the source is going to be the ultimate answer. However, in the meantime, I have found these Katchy Indoor Flying Insect Catcher to be useful.
I got myself this thing. It attracts the little fuckers with a UV light, they get sucked down into a vortex, and land on a piece of sticky paper. Then all you do is replace the sticky paper like once a week. (Or more, depending on just how bad your situation is.)
I had a similar problem, infected ALL my plants. I sprayed them all with Neem oil, stuck a yellow trap in each plant, and bought THIS. My saving grace of an item:
In the mean time- check this out! I have one and it works great!!
Katchy Indoor Fly Trap - Catcher & Killer for Mosquito, Gnat, Moth, Fruit Flies - Non-Zapper Traps for Buzz-Free Home - Catch Flying Insect Indoors with Suction, Bug Light & Sticky Glue (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_0GJAA411C6Z0FWKTVN4B?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I lived in Georgia over the summer and had 20+ gnats/fruitflies flying around my living room at any given time. Bought on of these and they were all gone literally overnight and never had an issue again. Not sure how they would be for commercial use but i gotta imagine it would help considering how quick it cleared my place up. And its contained too, no open sticky traps or shockers. ^^^(Not ^^a ^^paid ^^advertisement ^^i ^^swear)
We had drain fly issues and one of these really helped: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_57DQKZK6629YSG624GQ5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It'll attract and trap any of the small flying insects like drain flies, fruit flies, no see ums, and gnats. It won't fix where they're coming from, but it'll help get rid of them in your room.
So this looks like a UV light bug trap. It works by luring them in with the light, and they get sucked in by the fan. I have one that I really like called Katchy. It's been great for gnats flying around my houseplants. Here's the Amazon link.
It's not this exact brand, but hopefully it's what you're looking for
Gnats are annoying AF. If you’re looking for alternative methods at gnat control... Katchy is amazing! I bought mine on Amazon and it is a game changer when it comes to catching gnats. Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Original-Indoor-Insect-Trap-KATCHY/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=katchy&qid=1607157118&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1 Also, Hydroguard works wonders! It’s pretty much good bacteria that doesn’t allow gnat larvae to survive and ultimately produce more gnats.
Another idea is a katchy or something like it. I like it because I have terrarium in my work office and it’s more discrete than fly tape and vinegar traps if you need to consider aesthetics
Don’t know about a repellent but this thing works great for getting rid of the bugs in the air. It works best at night. KATCHY Indoor Insect Trap: Bug, Fruit Fly, Gnat, Mosquito Killer - UV Light, Fan, Sticky Glue Boards Trap Even The Tiniest Flying Bugs - No Zapper- (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rMwGFbHA6QH0T
I’ve tried everything it seems. One thing that’s worked really well is this thing called Katchy. It is a quiet little tabletop unit with a fan and UV light that attracts gnats, fruit flies, etc. When they fly toward the light it sucks them into a glue board in the bottom. I couldn’t believe how many gnats, flys, and stuff it caught. There were insects on the glue board I didn’t even know were in my house. But mainly it was taking out those incessant fruit fly/gnats that breed like crazy.
It’s small, reasonably priced (totally worth it imo considering all I spent trying to find a decent solution), looks kinda cool, and the damn fruit flies haven’t seemed to wise up to it like they do to all other things I’ve tried. It doesn’t smell like the vinegar traps and bring more into your home, it uses no chemicals, hardly makes any noise, requires no maintenance, and is fun to check. They can’t resist it.

I used this for gnats and it works well.
https://www.amazon.com/Original-Indoor-Insect-Trap-KATCHY/dp/B07B6RZP4H
Similar concept but slightly different. It has a fan the sucks them down to a glue trap at the bottom.
That link didn't work for me. Maybe try this one.

I've had this for years and I love it so much. It will save you! It's worth buying! Also it's like a little night light :)

We have used this device and had success. The key is to run it at night when you are asleep. The light in the device attracts the flies.

I had good results using this^^
While this isn't a way to stop them, it works great to mitigate the ones that are alive. I had them on a septic at my last house so my drain options were really limited without damaging the septic system.
https://smile.amazon.com/Original-Indoor-Insect-Trap-KATCHY/dp/B07B6RZP4H/
we had that problem b/c we had toddlers who love fruit, and our garage got insane. i got this and took a gamble, but it largely worked. that and the bug-a-salt.
https://www.amazon.com/Original-Indoor-Insect-Trap-KATCHY/dp/B07B6RZP4H
We just got one of these to combat fruit flies that hang out thanks to the parrot.

This helped me with gnats. Not sure if fruit flies are attracted to light but worth a look. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6RZP4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_DHY175V1DP0X6XKEXCJR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
In addition to mosquito bit tea and peroxide rinses, this does wonders!

The refills are pricey but I just buy big yellow sticky traps and cut them to fit 👍🏼
I bought this. It works and has cut down on the flies big-time.
does it really work for house flies? that's the nuisance at mom's. the amazon description specifically says no:
"Reduces bugs, but isn't a complete insect killer solution, not a substitute for pest control services. Not for house flies."
In my last house we had them bad, Katchy was a game changer. I tried everything to kill them in the drain, in the end I just put Katchy out all day next to the drains that had them.
https://www.amazon.com/Original-Indoor-Insect-Trap-KATCHY/dp/B07B6RZP4H
These cool traps are available from Amazon! It traps fungus gnats really well Katchy
I got this indoor bug catcher and it's worked very well. Was previously getting bit regularly.
Also a light fan blowing on you will prevent mosquitos from landing.
I have two of these and they are wonderful. Get the sticky pads for 2 reasons: 1) it more effectively traps bugs and 2) it is quite satisfying to see all the bugs it traps.
