I have this one and like it. it takes some time to arrive, but it works well and is easy to use at such a high magnification.
I also have a more common 30x/60x combined one that I've seen around. It works well, too, but it looks like it's no longer on Amazon.
I think it is this. But I didn't see a bad coice when looking. Its just a magnifier. Don't overthrow it. The trichomes will tell you. Look at them with a magnifier. Look for them to be about half clear/half cloudy. Or clear and some cloudy. And when all or almost all the wire hairs are gone or brownor orange. Your plant looks ready or almost ready probably. You can get a magnifier on Amazon for about $10 in a few days. You want this one.

Don’t bother with a jewelers loupe, they don’t magnify enough to look at trichomes heads.
Most will say wait for some amber trichomes and I have too but I’m going to recommend chopping before that. It depends on what you’re growing and what you want of course but I find amber makes the buzz really sedating. The amber is cannabinoids breaking down and CBN going up so avoid amber. Sometimes by the time the trichomes go all or mostly cloudy the flowers are past their peak and they start to lose smell and taste. I’ve recently chopped a couple way earlier than I’m used to with mostly clear / some cloudy and like the weed and the buzz much better.
Almost done! Dry it in a dark climate controlled environment at 60 deg / 60% humidity until small stems snap instead of bend.

Worthy investment. 13$
I bought a cheap loupe to inspect the tip... https://www.amazon.ca/KINGMAS-Microscope-Jewelry-Magnifier-Jeweler/dp/B00AQAANDS
So far, I'm on the original 0.4mm nozzle, and I only change them to switch sizes... 0.8 for big "structural" work, and 0.2 for 1:100 scale minis.
I've run roughly 10kg through the 0.4 nozzle, including several spools of "silk" and thermo-chromatic.
I’m a tricomb guy, grab a cheep scope off of amazon, https://www.amazon.ca/KINGMAS-Microscope-Jewelry-Magnifier-Jeweler/dp/B00AQAANDS/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=mini+microscope&qid=1567317008&s=gateway&sprefix=mini+micr&sr=8-5 Or search mini microscope and pick one
This one is 12$ Canadian and works perfect for this, the tricombs will start clear and then start to get cloudy and then start to turn Amber. I usually check the middle of the main cola on the plant and chop when it’s approx 60/40 Amber to cloudy. it’s a personal preference thing as the high changes depending on ratio. You should be able to find some you tube videos fairly easily that’ll help. The scope is also a must for identifying some pests as well. Great looking plant, good luck! I seem to have linked the wrong scope, you should get at least a x45 sorry about that
get something like this to view the trichomes. You’ve got the right information, I would go based off of trichomes rather than pistils (hairs). It’ll be much more accurate that way.
This is another popular option: https://www.amazon.com/KINGMAS-Pocket-Microscope-Jeweler-Magnifier/dp/B00AQAANDS/ref=pd_sim_201_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00AQAANDS&pd_rd_r=T85T5H6TCG8FQT8Q80XR&pd_rd_w=mh4B9&pd_rd_wg=9WA7H&psc=1&refRID=T85T5H6TCG8FQT8Q80XR
Multiple vendors sell that same one for multiple price points.
This is my personal one. I am sure there are better ones, but this is what I use after trying a handful off Amazon. Also has a blacklight built in IF you know how to use that test.

If it sounds normal, there's no way in hell it's sheared off.
I use one of these things to inspect styli:

My advice is to not worry so much about perceived dirt on the stylus.
60x. I got this thing. It did the trick https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQAANDS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00AQAANDS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_btf_t1_oYQDFbT412STG
Works incredible. Looks a little ‘cheaply made’ and small...but for trich’s on a live plant...it’s the best.
A handheld for checking trichomes, I like these little cheapies: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQAANDS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But checking for broad and russet mites, the USB plug-in is the way to go.
Do not smoke moldy weed. You will develop asthma. There are little weed scopes that come with two lights: one white LED and a purple UV. Get one and inspect the weed before you buy it. The grower has powdery mildew from dirty conditions and too much humidity. The PM will show up as bright white under the scope and your dealer will be horrified but you will be safe.
powdery mildew aka PM is dull white powdery spots on the bud.
Also, find a new dealer.
After the thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MTGLegacy/comments/6k77zx/buying_duals_is_terrifying/ I figured I'd try to disprove the rumor that the text is the biggest give-away (hint: it's not), and bring some degree of confidence to those who do want to buy duals (hint: just buy a $5 loupe!)
Here's the loupe I use: https://www.amazon.com/KINGMAS-Pocket-Microscope-Jeweler-Magnifier/dp/B00AQAANDS/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1498759657&sr=8-11&keywords=jewelers+loupe

Take about a month for delivery but it's a nice mic for the price.
I use one of these to inspect styli
A pocket microscope. Might get it tomorrow when I get paid and take pictures on my phone using it. :o
Get one of these and look at the trichomes when they are turning amber it's time to harvest. http://www.amazon.com/KingMas-Pocket-Microscope-Jeweler-Magnifier/dp/B00AQAANDS/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1459776502&sr=8-15&keywords=30x+magnifying
