It may be a better idea to buy a used PC and throw in a 1650 Super / 1660 Super if possible, since at $400, you're not necessarily getting great bang for the buck on all new parts. I'd take a look at local marketplaces and see what they're offering - it may not be better, but you may be able to save some money and get a rig which meets your needs at a low price. If you can't find anything better, I think your build is pretty solid as is - although, I would spend a bit more money to get a 500GB SATA6 SSD if you can - this Kingston A400 480GB is pretty solid, and will last you quite a bit longer than 240GB.
Do your self a favor and get a 500 or 1tb , because you will have it for long time. And you cannot add additional ssd on laptop. And ssd are getting cheaper faster than we expected.
Edit ; I didn't search extensively . But I think this is good deal Dont take my words for granted. Do your research too.
>I5 8th gen
I have an I5 7th Gen, I think an 8th Gen would be great for what you want.
>used storage
It can be fine, but maybe not recommended for mission critical data. Sata ssds are super cheap. 30 bucks for 480 gigs. That will make the computer feel way faster too.
>what graphics card should I get?
I don't necessarily want to make a recommendation (I just haven't looked at graphics cards in that price range recently), but I know my 1060 6gb would do everything you want and sells for about 100 bucks used. But you may well be able to get something newer or with a better price to performance ratio. I'd poke around YouTube a bit and see what people are recommending, the newer the advice the better (graphics cards have been really expensive, even only going back 6 months).
If the reason you wanna get a hdd is the price, I suggest that you just get an ssd instead. Right now, the prices are so good that it's only a little bit more expensive for an ssd. I recently got this one and so far it works great in my an515-55
The first thing you should do is backup your saves and sync your trophies.
I have had this one installed for a couple years and its great. They sell a 240gb version as well for $30. To be honest ANY name brand drive from a reputable seller (to avoid cheap Chinese knockoffs) will be fine.
I’ve purchased two different brands so far. Samsung and Kingston. For the Samsung SSD you have to download their software and migrate everything using their software. So you are limited to their software for your data migration. But they are top notch in my opinion. The Kingston SSD is open to using macrium reflect, which is the free software used in the linked YouTube video. They honestly are both great SSD’s and I have not had an issue with either one. But for the sake of simplicity I would probably go with the Kingston SSD. Here’s the Amazon link for the Kingston I bought.
Kingston 480GB A400 SATA 3 2.5" Internal SSD SA400S37/480G - HDD Replacement for Increase Performance https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N0TQPQB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_N8CRFSXEN54H4204WH7R?psc=1
That AWD-IT has excellent value, so that's why it may never be back in stock. The Palicomp I've shared does not have an SSD but don't worry. Types of SSDs do not affect game loading time, so a cheap SSD like this Kingston 500GB (£44) is sufficient.
I have a i7-7700 cpu and no m.2 slot in my motherboard unfortunately. If I buy something like this Kingston ssd it will it work on my build as a boot drive? How do I get the data from my old ssd to my new one? This is trying to upgrade my old ssd with only about 125 gb on it.
For the SSD, is there a specific type I should look for to make sure it will work with my computer? Would something like this work?: https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-240GB-Solid-SA400S37-240G/dp/B01N0TQPQB?ref_=Oct_s9_apbd_simh_hd_bw_b1PRaOp&pf_rd_r=NPXSRA6NPS7WBRATS433&pf_rd_p=5e982072-3675-5d4b-98b7-9d016bdf5c5c&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-10&pf_rd_t=BROWSE&...
Based on your mediocre description, I can only guess you're out of memory and paging to disk?
What are the specs of the machine? Are you rolling out to machines with platter disks instead of SSDS?
Every single version of Windows is more aggressive than the last with using 'stuff' - the first time this was a huge issue was Windows Vista and it's gone on since then. The solution is to throw hardware at the problem and it goes away.
If you've got 8GB, SSDs - Windows 10 will be fine, let it do it's initial install, initial caching, is software being deployed to it from your deployment server?
If you built a machine and 2 days later the disk is still endlessly thrashing, then yes, something is going wrong.
EDIT: read the rest of the thread.
Computers will be unusable with a HDD and Windows 10, unless they have 8+GB of memory and are ok with an exceedingly long, initial login time, after a solid 10 minutes on, they'll be 'ok'
I worked somewhere where instead of replacing the PCs they just did an SSD project upgrade, clone the old hard disk to a new SSD, don't even need to re-install Windows
You're insane to consider HDDs, it's simply not an option, the difference is massive.
Yep, you should be good to go.
Without knowing your current hard drive size, here's a 480GB SSD with excellent reviews for $86 (Prime Shipping)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N0TQPQB/
The laptop probably has a 320 or 500gb hard drive. This guy is about 10 times faster so it'd be a noticeable improvement.
This looks like a pretty decent deal for a replacement in terms of storage space if you were going to buy an SSD today: https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-480GB-SA400S37-480G/dp/B01N0TQPQB/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1492880793&sr=1-4&keywords=480gb+ssd
This is $135 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-480GB-SA400S37-480G/dp/B01N0TQPQB
Don't let the inflated "original" price fool you.
Thanks for this! PCPartPicker shows it updated about an hour ago!
Amazon has them for $134.99 + 120/240 versions.
Supposedly: "The Kingston A400 SSD series is available in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities with pricing at $49.99, $79.99 and 139.99, respectively."
It's being described as the new entry level SSD as far as I can tell.

That's a deal! Especially here in the uae this is a bargain op. Just gotta upgrade tge storage for less than 200aed
u/ketaking1976 is correct OP. This £1700 Alienware below (after code DFTSUMMER20) with Liquid-cooled i5-11400F and RTX 3080 has a much better value:
u/Distantbutton57 and u/RobloxAspect take a look at this very good deal as well.
For reference, I have it on a 480gb kingston ssd but those 2.5" should be about the same performance.
Your machine has a SATA 2 connection but any 2.5 inch 2.5 inch SATA 3 drive will work as the standard is backwards compatible. Just know that you won't get the advertised speed of a SATA 3 drive. It will still be an improvement.
You could do 8 GB of ram
As long as the new SSD is the same form factor (2.5inch) they should be compatible.
In terms of budget SSD's below $40 USD
there is one made by Kingston
https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-240GB-Solid-SA400S37-240G/dp/B01N0TQPQB/ref=sxin_14_ac_d_pm?ac_md=1-0-VW5kZXIgJDQw-ac_d_pm&cv_ct_cx=ssd&dchild=1&keywords=ssd&pd_rd_i=B01N5IB20Q&pd_rd_r=3e8cfbb9-2527-4329-986b-422aaf1aa488&pd_rd_w=MZPhl&pd_rd_wg=2vaw3&pf_rd_p=7bce1efb-5229-4289-8758-b64b1d02cfb8&pf_rd_r=X5TXPVVQC5VED6KRN8KM&qid=1600684288&sr=1-1-22d05c05-1231-4126-b7c4-3e7a9c0027d0&th=1
You might need a bigger budget though if 480 GB is to little.
In terms of Brands that I like, I would suggest WD, or Samsung.
The storage you linked is ok. But a psu that size aint needed.
Storage 2: (your first one is good, but get this too) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-A400-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B01N0TQPQB/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=ssd+kingston&qid=1594731372&sprefix=ssd+king&sr=8-2

Laptops, especially older ones, tend to have hard disk drives. These slow things down.
You said you've done a factory reset, and your problem persists. So chances are, there's no issue with your Operating System or programs installed on the computer.
More likely than not, your Hard Disk is failing. You should backup any important data off of it IMMIDIEATLEY and replace it. How you do the backup is up to you; if it's just a school laptop, backup any documents that you need to a flash drive, and replace the drive. If it's your main machine, or personal laptop, then it's the same concept, just expand to include pictures, videos, etc. Basically anything that you want to keep gets put on a flash drive.
For future reference, I believe you can setup automatic backups within Windows, that way you can just save stuff to your default documents / pictures / video folders and Windows will auto-backup, though it can be marginally complicated if you back up to an external disk. Backups made on the same disk are prone to data loss in the event of the disk failing, so it's not recommended to do that.
Anyhow. I'd recommend getting 1 flash drive for backing up data, and a second flash drive for installing Windows from scratch (look for how to do that at this link. Please note that if/when you are prompted for a product key, select "do this later" or a similar option - the key will automatically verify since you have a laptop.
P.S. When replacing your Hard Disk, please replace it with a SSD (Solid State Drive). They're a tad more expensive, but they help speed up the whole computer so much. If you're looking to spend about as much as you would on a new HDD, I'd recommend this Kingston 480 GB SSD Instead, priced at $60. I don't recommend smaller than 240 GB though, space disappears faster than you'd imagine.
Note: For price comparison, you can get this
Now this is a fun ask!
Ok so monitor here (Can´t buy a new CRT, who would have thought)
You didnt specify what the motherboard and CPU were so will need more information for the RAM.
Period authentic GPU right here it is at the end of your requested period however at least you will be able to play stuff decently on this beasty, I used to have one back in the day.
Now I know period authentic would mean an HDD however I would suggest a regular SATA SSD such as this one and then for the authentic taste this thing if you can find it.
Use a box cutter or a heat gun to open the plastic case. Amazon is having Prime Day sales and a lot of SSDs are on sale. I linked a 480gb Kingston ssd for $30 right now. Load times will be snappier with an ssd but don’t expect any performance gains over an hdd. The ssd is bottlenecked at sata II speed due to the 360 architecture.
Opening hdd case: https://youtu.be/-Kp0y6JxC3A
I'm using a cheap Kingston 500Gb SSD for metadata and transcoding. Works fine.
If he built his own pc he might need some new storage!
Get him an SSD. Like this one.
If you have extra money to spend get him the option with higher storage.

this would cost about $50 more have an SSD and an actual GPU to play games (gtx 970) it would be a much better system for a similar price
The drive is:
Toshiba MQ04ABF100
1TB/1000GB
5400rpm
Sata 7mm 2.5" Hard Drive 128mb, 6 Gbit/s.
Currently $42.95 USD on Amazon US.
Sorry, I will still say that it is a bad idea to replace a slow drive with another slow drive. By using even a $20 240MB SSD as your OS drive, everything will work better. All the slow storage in the world won't make the console any more enjoyable to play. If it were me, and of course I don't know what you can spend,I would compromise with:
https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-480GB-Solid-SA400S37-480G/dp/B01N0TQPQB $43.99
and
https://www.amazon.com/Portable-External-Drive-Desktop-Chromebook/dp/B07BCP3PYL/ $33.99
For $78 you have the best of both worlds, and a significantly improved PS4. YMMV.
This is the SSD I use in my pc and it works wonderfully, Kingston SSD, you could also choose 480gb if you choose to.
I have this one in a couple of laptops. Works great, you just need to know how to clone your hard drive
its this one. Bought it 2018 September.
MSI website says '" 2x M.2 NVMe support, up to 32 Gb/s using PCI-Express Gen3 x4 "
'PCIe 3.0 x4 refers to a Gen 3 expansion card or slot with a four-lane configuration.'.
I have 2x KINGSTON SA400S37120G. One is in my PC and the other for office PC for my wife. The one in my wifes PC is a replacement for 1 that failed instantly after installation. I had it in box for few years(it was a two pack deal). Used it only last year and *poof* broken. I have to say that Kingston support was great about replacing it. Probably end of series for then anyway but cool that I could get it replaced.
Both are in my price range.
Kingston A400 SSD SA400S37/480G - 50,99€
Kingston A400 SSD SA400S37/960G - 92,22€
Question though: Do they specify it as 480Gb as that is the actual size or will they still reserve some memory? Like if you get 120Gb you generally get about 112Gb usable size(on older models?). Cause if they reserve on top of it it might be between ~30Gb and ~55Gb space 'loos'.
Last thing: the only difference between the A2000 and https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B01N0TQPQB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A11IL2PNWYJU7H&psc=1 is the little speed increase and a little more memory, yes?

Would that SSD be good?
For about the same price as your m.2 drive you could get a 500gb 2.5in SSD and get a some more storage but it will probably be a tiny bit slower but not by much.
Here's a pretty good one - https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-480GB-Solid-SA400S37-480G/dp/B01N0TQPQB/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=2.5+in+ssd+500gb&qid=1605048618&s=electronics&sr=1-7
correct, that is why I am trying to figure out how to get my ssd drive to work with thunderbolt 2 port instead of the usb 3.0
I have these two parts now, and need the correct external enclosure for the ssd to work, and I can't find one on amazon

According to Google the minimum wage in Spain is 1108.33 euros per month.
That SSD costs 5.5% of the minimum wage in Spain.
In Brazil, the current minimum wage is 1045.00 reais.
Here is a 480GB SSD. At the time of this post it costs 413.67 reais. That's 39.5 % of the minimum wage in Brazil.
Considering that not that many people earn much more than that, it's expensive af.

First of all thank you u/ XYZGiveaways and u/EdenSB!
I want to enter on behalf of my brother to help him build his first gaming PC! I really want to help him so we can game together better! We love to play GTA online together. He just started playing recently when it was free on Epic Games. Before that he was not convinced he would like the game so when it was available for free he decided to try and fell in love with it! He has already made a fortune! The issue is that he plays in his crappy HP low budget laptop so whenever we play I have to wait for 10 minutes or more for his game to load and when we drive together his game lags a lot so the experience is kinda ruined and if his game crashes (which is often) I have to wait again for him a long time or he just decides to stop playing and we cut our gaming sessions short. For that reason he has decided to build his first gaming PC! I have helped him to find parts on amazon and even made a wish list we share and try to find good offers. I would use the money to buy him this SSD: https://www.amazon.com.mx/dp/B01N0TQPQB It's on amazon Mexico (where we are from) the price in USD is almost $60.
Thank you so much for the oportunity.

All new Solid State Drives are Sata III. You can plug in a SSD into a Sata II slot but data transfer is restricted. Which defeats the purpose of upgrading.
Buy a fitting kit with the Sata III cables included and it should also have a power connector cable. New computers have the loom from the power supply normally tied up and tucked away. So having the power connector means you can leave the loom nice and tidy and just use the power connector cable that comes with the kit.
I had a computer with a 120GB SSD for a few years and was waiting for the price on 500GB SSD drives to drop. Here are the two items I bought together:
and the fitting kit was:
Sabrent 3.5 inch/2.5 inch Fitting Kit
I bought a Kingston but you can buy whatever brand of SSD you want. Samsung SSD with Nand technology is one option.
Edit: I had better add this information for anyone adding a second drive for the first time. Sometimes after adding a new SSD the computer will recognize the new device and list it but may not assign a drive letter. This means everytime you click My Computer your new drive is not there but you can see it listed under Devices. All you need to do is go to Disk Management and set a drive letter.
Just posted the pcpartpicker link.
Here's the link for it though.

Spend $20 more and get a 480gb ssd to keep your games on.
should do you fine
Amongst other upgrades, I highly recommend purchasing an 2.5-inch SSD for your operating system, like this Kingston one on Amazon. Plug it in alongside your hard drive, install Windows 10 from a USB thumbdrive onto the SSD using these instructions from Microsoft, and then install drivers from HP. Finally, change your storage folders (Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc.) over to folders on the hard drive. The improved read-write performance for games loading from an SSD will help ameliorate any drawbacks from system age.
Also, if you're going to upgrade your PSU, DO NOT SKIMP on it. It is the single thing most likely to fry your computer and start a fire. I recommend ones like this EVGA G3 550W 80plus Gold one or a similar PSU from a reputable brand like Seasonic or Corsair.
> Do you think you'd drop $350 + $250 for SSD + RAM on one, though?
No, not that kind of money. Maybe $250 for SSD (Kingston A400 480GB $139.99) + 16GB of RAM (16GB Kit (2x8GB)). That would make a nice performance boost for an old MBP, and would give it a couple of more years.
> Why would it be causing problems all of a sudden?
Because HDDs suck and when they get older they start sucking even more.
It’s a standard 2.5” SSD. Check on amazon something in your price range and size.
PM if you need help cloning the drive.
