With the slats, I thought it might be a strainer of some kind, so I searched for strainer on amazon and this was the first to come up. Are the clips in the correct position for this?

I have one of these that is essentially what you're talking about, it's killer and so much more space saving than a normal strainer
Ask her what she needs in the kitchen first, to make sure you don't duplicate something she already has and that you don't give her something she doesn't need/use. Some good basic choices:
