One easy way into socks is to knit them on straight needles. There are many patterns for socks you can knit flat and then sew up. If you do it right the seam is barely visible and doesn't feel like anything on your foot. I recommend this book Knit Your Socks On Straight and there are other patterns as well.

I knitting socks TAAT tie up but was trying to help a friend who didn't know how to knitting in the round or with DPNs. I bought her this book Knit Your Socks on Straight by Alice Curtis
