The best lock is a good friend. They watch your bike as you buy the beers to bring back outside to share. Then swap places at the next brewery.
Best thing is you get to ride with a friend and enjoy beers while admiring your bike!
When im doing this type of thing alone I use a chain lock (https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-Keeper-Integrated-Bicycle-33-5-Inch/dp/B005YPK7V8/ref=asc_df_B005YPK7V8/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198084925599&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2943401122922715321&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hv...) and only leave my bike locked when I know I'll be back in under 5 minutes or have eyes on it while I'm gone.
I don't get the popularity of u-locks. They're rigid, so they provide great leverage for bolt-cutters.
Get a decent-quality chain lock with fabric over it, like this Kryptonite. That should make any mid-range bike not tucked away in a very secluded spot too much effort to steal.
I’m no hair expert but I hear this is a good lock to lock up a Lime Scooter, so it may work for other stuff.

Thanks for asking! Ended up getting the abus. So far so good. I've only had one close call where I thought it was jammed and I'd be f*****d but I slowed down, took a deep breath and got it open. Other than that it always works, feels quality, and gives me the confidence I need in NYC. If someone broke through this lock I'd be pretty shocked. (I know, power tools but still.) I also have a Kryptonite Keeper as my no. 2 lock. I use it if I feel I need to lock both wheels or if the I need a bit more room, as u-locks can sometimes be a struggle. Two caveats:
I only realized after I bought it that it was a slightly older version of the abus granite 470. Not sure if it matters or if wasn't made as well but it feels fine. I realized because all my online research said it was rated by "Sold Secure" as gold, but my packaging said silver.
The light in the key fell out almost immediately but I didn't really care cuz I never used it. Overall I'm happy with it, if I was doing it again I probably would have opted for something else.
Thanks for the info!
Btw which trackers and locks do you use? And do you hide the trackers in your frame? Currently don't have an auto, and I'm lucky enough to live around Baker so I don't really need one to do all my shopping. Everything's walkable, but it'd be nice to shave some time now and then and grab last minute groceries on my bike.
Currently have a Kryptonite close to this. . It served me well enough in Miami, but that was pre-Pandemic, and I think people are more thiefy these days everywhere.
I have one of those absurdly bulky Kryptonite chains like this for the front wheel.
To register you head over to the Department of Parking and registration on campus, if youre gonna be here during week of welcome theres also tables all over the place so if you ask around you can at least get pointed in the right direction. as for your lock...that setup is pretty popular but honestly speaking my neighbor had the same one and it was just cut and his bike was stolen. Its really up to you how much money youre willing to spend but I use this:http://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-Keeper-Integrated-Bicycle-32-Inch/dp/B005YPK7V8/ref=sr_1_2?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1438142500&sr=1-2&keywords=kryptonite+bike+lock same company but quite the more heavy duty chain. pair that with a u-lock and youre good to go.
I am thinking of ordering 2 of these. Amazon Link I have heard good things about these locks and I can get one red and one black. Do you know anything about them?
It's called the "Keeper 785" (amazon link). I definitely prefer a chain to a u-lock around the city since it gives more flexibility on lockup locations.
Kryptonite 3ft and i use a second chain with a shrouded lock when i am in an area that it is necessary.
locking it through the back wheel and frame is best. and make sure you attach it to something fixed to the ground permanently. if you dont have it fixed to something permanent, theives will just pick it up and wander off with it to cut your locks off later.

When you say chain, you mean something like this kryptonite lock, not something like this cable lock?
Cheers for the thorough response, I wouldn't have known about the cover holes.
Random follow-up: when do I need to be concerned about the kickstand? Is it only really hot days and fresh tar? I've just been using the center stand so far.
