at the store, just put it in your shopping cart.
if it will be out of your sight for any length of time, the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit has been recommended here.
if you only need to prevent a regular pick-up-and-walk-off theft, a regular cable bike lock should be enough -- but anyone with a little time or tools can get through those rather quickly.
Overkill? Maybe. Comes with $5000 coverage? Yes. Heavy? Oh heck yes. But it's not a problem when you got a ebike. Love my lock and don't worry about the bike anywhere with this baby on it. I lock the frame and rear wheel with it. The front wheel has a locking threw axel
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_MG71DTWWK354R7QP7FTF
I used to work at a bike shop. Cable lock is about 3 seconds (bolt cutter, then cable cutter). U lock is about 60-200 seconds with a hacksaw or 30-45 seconds with a power tool. The most effective lock is a hardened chain with twisted links like this (this one doesn't have twisted links, but the angled links are also very good): https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-1415-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G -- at this point the best method is to cut or undo the rack and you'd have to use a torch to cut the lock later.
Basically there's no way to prevent bike/vehicle theft if your item is the most valuable one on the rack and the thief has a full minute.
this is considered one of the better locks out there, if you look at the reviews you can see that thieves still get thru it. and even if they need time or a angle grinder making sparks like crazy, strangers are not gonna stop them (and they shouldn't, too much danger).
this is even higher risk if you have a nicer bike or ebike. the longest i would leave my bike on street is a few minutes and even then only if it was in my line of sight. that means i never use my bike for errands etc, in those cases i use citibike.
I recommend a disc brake lock and level 10 chain. Heavy but super versatile for any kind of lock-up situation. Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain 1415 & New York Disc Lock
Yup, I got it a few weeks ago. Any lock should work really! I got this lock for my ebikes, but have only used it once for 5 mins so far:

I use the same u lock and this bad boy for a bit more versatility. It’s heavy but I think worth it. Of course any lock can be cut but I feel this combo makes it take longer than most.

I think kryptonite will actually reimburse you up to a certain value if it’s stolen. I lock my ebike with this one. It’s name is appropriate. Fuhgeddaboutit.
Any of the like 14+ mm chains rated for motor vehicles, not necessarily Kryptonite brand. I went with this one, but there might be something better out now.
I have a Kryptonite York FAHGETTABOUDIT lock that weighs 15lbs, though I've only used it once so far. The alarm works great if im just stepping inside briefly to grab takeout or something.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8gGHFbAA94PE3
I've never biked to school here. But in the GTA I had my bike stolen. Now if I'm going to leave my bike anywhere I use one of these extra large chains: https://www.amazon.ca/Kryptonite-999492-60-Inch-Fahgettaboudit-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=asc_df_B001SMUB7G/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292958473101&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12433647985033178060&hvpone=&hvpt...
Anything smaller can be easily cut or removed. I don't know how bad bike theft is here. If it's anything like the GTA then I'd invest in a good lock if your bike is worth anything.
Also, they do make an even heavier duty version: https://smile.amazon.com/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-Bicycle-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1526569055&sr=1-3&keywords=kryptonite+fahgettaboudit
It's a bit pricier than you were originally talking, but it's some tough shit and can be bought in a 5 ft (1.52m) length.
Make sure you get yourself a pretty heavy duty chain and lock it up to something that can't be cut easily. Something like this. It may seem like overkill but if its parked outside without something like this its only a matter of time before it gets lifted.
I disagree here. Large, heavy chains anchored so something solid are great at deterring theft. I use one similar to this - https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-999492-Black-Fahgettaboudit-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/
Disc locks are great for preventing ride away thefts. However, many motorcycles thefts are done by a few guys who just lift the bike into a van/truck. Discs locks do nothing to prevent this.
Two of these. One of them is around a concrete pillar and through the rear wheel. The other is just looped into the front wheel. Disc lock. Steering lock. Good insurance.

This 5 foot chain is long enough to wrap around a light post and go through your back tire.
I picked up one of these last year and the peace of mind it brings is awesome.
Unfortunately, the apartment complex I just moved to doesn't have anywhere to lock my bike too. Thankfully I'm next in line for a garage when someone moves out so I'll be able to store it there.
Big fan of the Kryptonite New York FAHGETTABOUDIT chains.

Also WyzeCams are both cheap and have an amazing app if you haven't committed yet:
Strongly recommend against that lock. It's unbranded, overstock junk. The links are probably cheap round steel, maybe only a few mm thick. Bolt cutters will go straight through it no question.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as cheap security. To secure a bike in a shed I would expect to spend minimum $200/bike; I'd be using something like this. 14mm hardened chain, and 15mm shackle mini u-lock. No bolt cutter is getting through that. The small u-lock also makes it a bit harder to attack with a grinder. Chains, especially thick ones like this, are trickier to attack with a grinder too. Not impossible, but floppy chains are hard to grind since you need to tension the chain to properly cut it.

Obviously, if someone wants something bad enough, they'll get it, but this is definitely a deterrent.
Hey there. Here’s some suggestions based on what people in NYC have posted or said in the past.

I bought this one in spite of not being able to afford it. It is now shorn in two, sitting on my desk.
Haven't bought a lock that nice since, further research concluded that it just wasn't worth it unless it was actually difficult to cut. From what I understand, the only difference the NYlocks make is that they take slightly longer to cut, which can matter in a few cases, but not enough. I stick to the 60-80 dollar tier of ulock these days.

My property isn't the problem, the last few thefts happened during errands, not overnight from home. The last few also happened within 30 minutes of leaving the bike, in each case I was stopping to get to-go food or pick up a prescription.
Definitely bring your bike in, if you can, but in general - this is the bike lock to have, especially if you're in a high bike theft area.
The lockpickinglawyer uses a kryptonite chain.
Basically angle grinders have a tough time getting the right "angle" to cut the thick chains BUT it can be done with enough time. You are just trying to waste their time so you can catch them.
Additionally, LPL CANNOT break the Kryptonite U-Lock Fahgettaboudit. He literally broke his hydraulic cutters on it. He did lock pick it in a couple minutes BUT this is with a custom tool and his expertise. A normal thief is going to for the easy targets and has next to no lockpicking skills.
I use two Fahgettaboudit U lock AND ABUS chain on my E-Bike with no issues. I have two U locks because one is my wife's but we can easily secure both bikes with the two locks and chain.

These will be your best friends, spend at least 10% of your bikes worth on security using a big heavy duty chain lock like the link below, as well as another cheaper lock to keep the front tire attached to the frame.

Check out the “awesome” reviews on Amazon. Read the first ten reviews - all one star for being garbage.
It goes under 35, so is considered a 49cc bike and you can drive with a regular C license (no Motorcycle M required). They get stolen all the time, so be careful. Use a big lock and chain (https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-1415-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G)
It is a Chinese bike, so parts/work on it might be tough.
I'd get a beater Yamaha Vino/Honda Metropolitan for that price. They are rock solid and easy to fix.
Other option is just a ebike and bring in house when done.

See this $130 chain and lock? it can be cut off in about 60 seconds by thiefs that walk around with a $100 tool.
Imaginary locks can't stop a 12 year old.
Keyptonite make a 60”/1.5m 14mm chain, but it is a tad pricy. Ver 1415 is the long one

Backpack or if it’s a short ride I’ll have it over my shoulder. If I didn’t care about my frame I’d just wrap it around the top tube
For my motorcycle, I use the Kryptonite FAHGETTABOUDIT lock.
It's expensive, but it would be a real pain to cut through this... at least without making a significant amount of noise. I have it running through my rear wheel and my swingarm and then through a gate at my apartment that is secured to the concrete. A thief could still get it, but it would take them a little while to cut through all of it.
The downside is that this chain/lock is HEAVY and I wouldn't want to have to carry it with me everywhere.
Even has the bike insurance incase someone has a grinder and the time to go through 2 of these.
Might be hard to find a convenient place a Ulock will attach properly with such a large bike. A kryptonite chain or the like might be your best/better option (or a few, you have the room to carry em) as you state there is often no place to lock up and this greatly expands your options.
Being lazy with bike security on a 2-3k bike is not an option IMHO. (not yelling just pointing it out)
Yes I would strip batteries or easily removable Items and never leave anything inside it. That promotes repeat offenders if you park in the same area.
I would insure it if your going to park it often, cant recommend an agency though.
I rarely if ever leave my bike anywhere but when I do I use a combo of Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini and a small fold-able for the front wheel. I am securing a standard frame mountain bike.
I haul out my battery in a shoulder bag
I haul out my post/seat as well and strap it to the side of my backpack.
What kind of motor/battery setup are you using on that?
You wanna get a Kryptonite lock. NYC messengers swear by em.
EDIT: Their best one: https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-Bicycle-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1531612822&sr=8-3&keywords=kryptonite+lock
You could upgrade the Ulock to something like a heavy chain, make sure it goes through the wheels and lock the rack to the vehicle. Shouldn't have any issues. Nobody is getting through this - https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-Bicycle-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/
Yeah man, just moved into a place with no garage or cover and was agonizing over how to keep my Monster from being an easy target. Found an article by a guy who used to steal bikes for a living. Said those disc locks are toys, the built in steering lock just takes a few firm kicks, and if nothing else two big dudes can just pick a bike up. He recommended the lock below, and make sure its through the FRAME (not swingarm, tire comes off quick) and anchored to something truly stuck in the ground. I've got mine on a big utility pole. Keep the outside of the cover dirty, but feel free to brush out/rinse the inside every once in awhile. If you can, find a place out of view of the main road but under lighting, or consider installing an outdoor solar powered/motion activated light (can be found for like $10-$15)

Also interesting to note, this once-thief said don't bother with GPS trackers. Apparently very few idiots steal and keep a bike. For the most part they'll find the tracker during teardown or damage the bike so badly you don't want it back anyway.
Cheers
I just got a CBR 500r and after reading the AMA I purchased this chain and this disc brake lock. Im still paranoid it will get stolen but the good thing is there are 3 other bikes near mine that are much more expensive and not locked. Im more worried about the caltrian parking lot.
