This is what I used... (Amazon UK link btw, not sure where you are) it's a cheap no brand one but it seems plenty good for what I've used it for... I reckon the range is about 10m-15m but can't say for sure, and you can use it outside but the bright midday sunlight you're probably not going to be able to see it all that much so I wouldn't bother unless it was cloudy/sunset/shadowy etc. It's self levelling and I've checked it up against my 1800mm Stabila level and it's dead on but your mileage may vary if it's a different batch. It doesn't come with a tripod but it'll fit any normal tripod... I wish I had bought one because it would make setup a lot easier than stacking it on top of a bunch of boxes!

I'd go with the green one as you'll see it easier and they say it's brighter too but I don't have the red one so can't compare. For the price I'd pick one up... but if you aren't going to be doing much other diy there may not be much point.
