Yes, the animated series takes place before the comic and I recommend watching it before reading any of the graphics novels, but it's pretty safe going up to volume 6 without having seen the show. After that they start sprinkling in stuff which, fun fact, wasn't even out yet.

To watch the show I think you'll have to wait the english sub (it's being made) or the english dub. However you can read the comic now buy buying it on amazon.

Some things to keep in mind.

They only have released english translations volumes 1 - 6, so you are gunna have to read the fanlations (fan translations) made by LiveAnotherDave here on this Reddit. Dont trip dog. They are good!

Another thing. There is a 10 year time skip between the animation and the comics. Keep reading and eventually things will make sense. Although you will have more questions like I do, but let's not spoil anothing. ;)
