In my opinion, one of the best ways to get immersed in music aside from making it is learning the history of it. Knowing how it came about and how it influenced other genres. Especially how it evolves over time. I've been reading through a book called Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey and it's been great. Definitely worth checking out.
I dated a girl who had this on her bookshelf. I scoffed at first and then found myself reading the shit out of that book. But, still, a lot of the content seems like common sense picked up by spending time in the trenches.
I got more inspiration from reading Last Night a DJ Saved My Life than by anything else I've ever read or watched.
Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey
It's really the only book about music I've read, but it's an amazing read. Definitely recommended for anybody interested in any of the culture's many facets.
I totally have Last Night a DJ Saved My Life to thank for turning me on to most of that.
I made mixes for Northern Soul and Pop Punk.
I'm currently exploring Disco right now- so far it's been a lot of the early Gamble and Huff/Philadelphia International Records stuff (Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, MFSB, etc). I also have a list at home of artists and singles I need to find based on reading Last Night a DJ Saved My Life. It's honestly the best book on music I've ever read. The chapters are broken up by genre, and feature an in depth look at them in the context to what DJing brought to the genre and how the DJ influenced it as well. After I'm through with Disco, I'm moving on to House.
