i find that when it’s in anything lighter it slips off or the lights are too heavy and need more support
We have been pals for about a month. The two potted photos are the most recent and the other two are how he looked in the past. Poking around this forum has taught me a lot about how to care for these guys, but I'm not sure what I'm doing in a couple of areas.
I made the mistake of trimming up his tap root. When I cleaned him up in some nice non organic soil I noticed that his root was very brown and dry like I had seen in some posts. I gave him water therapy for a week, but I'm not sure if that was a good idea.
I don't know how long they should be getting light for, at what intensity, and from what distance. This is the light that I'm working with: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV2GF84?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Thanks for any and all advice!
Those are both fairly intense—he's just growing some basil on top of a small desk. I was thinking along the lines of something like this
But I was worried that it's too dinky/a piece of crap. hopefully that formatted right
Yep! It’s this one. I really like it because it’s got a built in timer function so it switches on at 8AM and off at 8PM every day.

The Grow Lamp that you have seen in my videos uses also 5W bulbs. But in addition of the difference in color, instead of being aligned in a single row of light, they are set in 4 rows for a single bulb.

WARNING 1: If you ever look for a replacement LED bulb, make sure you get the right voltage. When I decided to get a spare one, I used the wrong search words, and game me only one option that did look to be the right one, one I put it on. I tried the both spares and they never worked. THEN investigated more in detail, and although the LED Bulbs that I got in the picture look identical, they consumed 50W instead of 5W like the ones I got. At least did not waste my money, I was able to use both of them at the bathroom lamps. ^_^
They still sell the grow lamp that I bought in 2019, that the 60W they mention is an equivalent of light, not the power that the light bulb uses. I had to jump serious hoop through comments and reviews until I found ONE question trying to verify if the LED Lamp needed a 5W LED bulb, or if it could use any other.
Adding 5W to the search, then this time provided me with the right spare LED bulb. That I am happy to inform it works now like a charm. :)
WARNING 2: Looks like this type of LED Lamp is moving away from 5W and moving up to the 50W version.
For a while, I could not find my 5W grow lamp, but I did find some like this that is more in line with the 50W ones:

it says 88W. Here's the amazon link to the light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MV2GF84/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am concerned that it is not enough. All of my grow lights are 30W+ and they're relatively small. You also need photo cells specifically designed for growing plants (if you're using LED). Regular LED lighting is not sufficient for proper growth because it does not emit the correct light spectrum.
Considering purchasing a clip on 30W grow light from amazon. They're less than $30 and most of them work great. I prefer the natural colors >

I got this one on amazon but have only had it a week so can't attest to if it works or not. Good reviews though https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV2GF84?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I had this, but the clip was finicky https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MV2GF84/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I now use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NNZXGMW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how much light comes through the blinds.
I use one of these led grow light clips for supplemental light: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV2GF84/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_btf_t1_nx8sFbEF5E41K
It works pretty well.
I have some of these for plants on my desk, they are nice because you can adjust the distance and whatnot and aesthetically I think they look nice. They are small so I have to keep them pretty close more light hungry plants (like, 4-6 inches) to see any benefits.
I also have a bookshelf with 4 strips of these under each shelf, they aren't going to be as effective as tube fluorescent lights but I wanted something more low profile for aesthetic reasons. I leave them on for 16 hours per day, and have def seen improvements since I added them - my succulents don't etiolate any more and develop more vibrant stress coloring.
The amazon choice grow lights. $19.99!

I only paid 30 bucks. Bought off Amazon. For some reason the price isn't listed on the link but I checked my email and I paid $29.99. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV2GF84/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_pVAPEbDY259WY
These have worked well for me, and they're easy since you can just clip them to something. There's a different set on there that's got 3 bulbs on it too, so you can cover more area if you need. (personally these are my absolute favorites but you're quite limited in how you can hang them unfortunately). They're wonderful because you're not as limited in both where you can put your plants, and what kinds you can have. If you have plants that prefer low light, like calathea or ferns, or if you just think the yellow lights are too bright, you can consider the purple grow lights also.
Here at the shop I leave mine on for about 9 hours a day, my timers are set to come on at 8 AM and back off at 5 PM. At home where I have a small handful of plants, I just use the built in timer on that grow light, so I actually leave that one on for 12 hours a day. Anything from 8-12 hours should be good enough.
I have the same problem with the lack of light. I use these grow lights around my house

I’ve mainly used them for succulents but my succulents are growing like crazy under these so I assume it’d be good for anything. I like them because they don’t have weird harsh lighting like some of the other light bulbs. You can use them with the clamp they come with or I’ve even taken the bulb out and put it in lamps. Itd have to be a specific kind of lamp though. I’ve also heard these grow lights are really good but they are kinda pricey.

I actually ended up with white lights from amazon. Still dont like the UV near my skin though, which is why I have the timer. Others have suggested they’re too far from my plants to do anything, so I may need to update my setup a bit.
Here’s the full spectrum I got if you’re not boycotting Bezos:
