If anyone is interested, these are the grow lights I've been using for the last few years. I only had 1 light in the living room this winter as the others have been placed around the house. Bought 5 and just ordered 2 more.
It probably needs more light to have enough energy to flower. Assuming a plant isn't sick and isn't parched for water, if they're just scraping by they may be slowly starving from light deprivation.
Orchids can get by without direct sun, but they need really bright indirect light to thrive. My mom has some in a west facing window so they get direct light part of the day and they rebloom nicely. I would err on the side of more light not less, even some direct sun is ok as long as they aren't scorched.
My windows face north so I've got 6 of these on timers covering a variety of plants. I overwintered petunias using them last year and the petunias bloomed throughout winter non-stop.
After trying other "purple/pink" lights which sucked, I found these lights actually work and you can probably grow anything under them indoors.
I've got 2 pots of 2 orchids each, and on a 9 hour timer plus some ambient window light, they rebloomed beautifully, with one having multiple stems of flowers and another white orchid with flowers lasting 6 months. I couldn't believe it. The light really woke them up.
And with an outlet timer or smart plug, you can set it and forget it. I've got mine set up to turn on before sunrise and off around noon so the bright light isn't bothersome in the evening.
If your orchids won't rebloom, try a grow light.
it’s a pretty standard leg grow light i got on amazon. i’ve attached the exact one below.
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants, Relassy 15000Lux Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Light with Replaceable Bulbs, Professional for Seedling Growing Blooming Fruiting [link]
I had a similar one i used for my plants until they weren't seedlings anymore, anything after is say dont do. They worked good for me. Plants didn't stretch at all, but moved to real lights as soon as I could [link]
I hate the purple glare of most LED grow lights, to me it ruins the aesthetic of my pretty plants. I think that far north, being too close to the window might be a little risky depending on the plant, some are cold tolerant, some are not. I have a couple smaller setups like on tables and my mantle where I use a little double headed white LED grow light from Amazon. These are the ones I have:
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plant, Relassy 45W Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Ligh with Replaceable Bulb,Double Switch, Professional for Seedling Growing Blooming Fruiting [link]
They're pretty small and easy to move around lol I'll shove plants in every single nook and cranny possible and these are perfect for that. The bummer about having these scattered about is that you have to do a little marathon twice a day flipping them all on and off as opposed to one big rack setup.
Ok I didn’t mean to delete it, but yeah I ordered one like 2 weeks ago and it was SUPER bright, but otherwise it seems like a grow light. That was my first time ever buying a grow light so I might not be the person to ask. Also here’s the link again since I deleted my comment [link]

Mine flowers maybe every 3 months after I got it some dedicated plant lights ( these LED ones, just an example - lots of options). I keep the lights on a timer, 8am-8pm. Before the lights it was kind of small, not doing well. But it really seems to like the lights. I'm moving it to a larger pot after I read up on what kind of soil they like.
Check that you've got drainage, and that it get a little water. I wait until I see the leaves slightly dimple and then water it (just a little). I also pushed one of those plant-food sticks in the dirt. (No idea of those are the right things to do, but mine seems happier now.)
I’ve had the cooperi under the light for 4ish months continuously now- my apartment gets lackluster light most of the year. I have them on a timer for about 10 hours of light a day, and the lights are just full spectrum LED grow lights that i got from amazon. i’ve had them for about a year now and they’re very good.
grow lights are your friends! i also just moved and my new place has not great windows. i bought these off a recommendation from here. there's some info in the sidebar on what kind you should be looking for (I think something like 2500 lumens and 600 kelvin? is the sweet spot)

This is my first VFT, and I am wondering what I should do about dormancy. I live in SE Michigan so outdoor growing is not possible. Currently the plant is around a year old and lives in my office at work. I work in an interior room with no natural sun light. I have a full spectrum grow light on a timer [link]
I have been running the timer for about 12 hours right now stepped down from 16. From my underatanding it is the shortening of daylight that triggers dormancy.
I have a heated garage and west facing window. I believe would make a good winter home for my plant. The garage stays around 40-50 degrees, just enough to melt snow off my truck overnight. Right now the max possible sunlight around here is 9ish hours. The window is west facing so it would be even shorter than that all winter.
Should I just move my plant and be done? Should I step the light down to like 10 hours before a move? Is it strong enough to enter dormancy or should I up the light for a healthier plant?

Got this one from Amazon. I've been happy with it so far. All my orchids are growing new roots and leaves unlike last year with minimal light from a shaded East facing window
It's this light from amazon.
Not sure what that all means but this is the light I bought:
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants, Relassy 15000Lux Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Light with Replaceable Bulbs, Professional for Seedling Growing Blooming Fruiting [link]
Okay, this is the light that's currently on there:
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants, Relassy 15000Lux Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Light with Replaceable Bulbs, Professional for Seedling Growing Blooming Fruiting [link]
What would be the best use of this light, don't want to waste it since I just bought it.
I do also have one of these. It wasn’t really for the bay plants, but it works ok, if you have an appropriate place to clamp it. And because it’s a white light, it’s not so jarring in a room as a pink grow light tends to be.
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants, Relassy 15000Lux Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Light with Replaceable Bulbs, Professional for Seedling Growing Blooming Fruiting [link]
just make sure you keep the lights within a few inches of the plants and you’ll be good

it might be the same ones. the key is making sure they’re close (within a few inches) of the plant.

I got them on amazon! here
Yes! On amazon! 🙂
Make sure to get these exact ones though, I bought some that looked just like this but were total junk and not full spectrum.

This is a lamp I have but there are some single lamps too if you look on Amazon or something. I think a full spectrum is what to look for in the other lamps. The one in the link works well for me
I think there’s a review thread or recommendations on grow lights in the sidebar, but you can also search for the term grow light in this thread. It’s been asked a lot. Tons of grow lights are small, perfect for a handful of succulents. There won’t be any big ones hanging from the ceiling because that’s too far away for it to work lol! 😆 I got mine on amazon and it does a pretty good job, just gotta keep it really close [link]
I use that same light and also beheaded my echeveria after it stretched out. I wondered if I didn't have the light on for long enough during the day? How large is your plant (if this even makes a difference)? I ended up moving it to the patio permanently for sunlight (we have mild winters in Central Texas).
Edit: I've heard some good things about this light.
I got 2 sets of these:
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plant [link]
In my honest opinion, I feel like they're just enough to get by since most of my plants are so big, this light would do really well for smaller plants, like my aloes hidden away on the left side of the after pic.
I plan on getting a bigger light in the future to install in the middle, then I'll place the 2 I have off to the sides.
That being said, I really like the company and the type of light they give off, have no complaints aside from my being foolish enough to buy lights this small for the jungle!
Howdy! I recently purchased this light: [link]
Is it strong enough? I definitely see notable growth in the two weeks that I’ve had it, but this fella seems like he might be getting leggy growth. I decided to move the lights even closer.
Was it this one by chance? I have about a 15 ft row of plants at my window that seem to be doing great, but many of them I bought as sad and forgotten so some are still in the process of healing. I want to buy a few lights and disperse then among the crowd. If you say herbs love it, I just might start a garden indoors to compliment my outdoor one [link]
This one. I just removed the lightbulb itself and attached it to the printed pot thing just to try and see what kind of difference it makes for the pepper to have it's own dedicated light.
I just got a cheap one on amazon to test out hydroponics. I use the lights at night, and during the day i use the sunlight. The DWC system is on the southern most window.
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plant, Relassy 45W Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp
I got this and I swear it did absolutely nothing! :( I ended up buying these: Seachem Flourish Freshwater Plant... [link] on Amazon and they worked way better.
Most growers grow their ornamental plants in fields where they get 12+ hours of actual sunlight every day in summer, and under hoop houses where they get 8+ hours of sunlight in the winter. This results in very compact growth. You'd be hard-pressed to get as compact growth indoors no matter what your lighting situation is. Best you can do is put your friend outside every spring, or put him outside permanently if your climate allows.
Additionally, I've moved away from red/blue grow lights. My first reason being they're terrible to look at, but my next few reasons are that I was never satisfied with the growth I got with them. I seem to remember reading that green light suppresses stem-lengthening hormones and results in more compact growth, though I can't seem to find any sources for that.
What I was able to find was that green light penetrates leaves better to support the bottom-most leaves (you can read about it at the Garden Myths website). There's also a fair amount of research saying green light does result in active photosynthesis (source). I've moved to a grow light that fairly closely mimics sunlight.
If you're interested here is the one I use, though I also have really good success with regular old lightbulbs.
I have one that stays put and one I move around. This is this one I move around.
Amazon. I bought it on Canadian Amazon but here's link to Amazon.com
I bought some clip-on plant lights from Amazon, would that work? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C68N7PC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This one worked wonders with mine
Sure! It’s this one: Relassy 15000Lux Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp [link]
I have two of these: [link]
I bought some clip lights from Amazon. They are full spectrum white light, which I prefer. I also like that the heads swivel, and goosenecks can be moved around as needed.

Can you guys suggest an affordable grow light that would suffice? I saw this one(https://smile.amazon.com/Relassy-Spectrum-Gooseneck-Replaceable-Professional/dp/B07C68N7PC/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=15%2C000+lux+grow+lights&qid=1617687304&sr=8-5) as its advertised as 15,000lux while still meeting the proper spectrum specs. However it seems to be a bit on the cheap side and I'm always weary of the age old idiom "You get what you pay for".
The lux rating isn't available for my current light but it seems to be giving off about 4,500.
😅😅 glad I could help!
These are the little lights:
I have like 6 or 7 in my living room I'm not sure, but they help limp the plants through winter
I’ve got these for my succulent shelf and I love them! They don’t have a built in timer, so I bought a smart plug to set up the time that way.
I've been using these for years. 💜😊 [link]
My seedlings definitely thrived under lights like these. Couldn't tell you if it'd support a full bonsai grow but it definitely won't set you back in the beginning. This is what I used [link]
I’m in almost exactly the same situation and have had great luck with a $30 LED gooseneck lamp off Amazon:
These have worked well for me, I like the white light compared to purple/blue lights because it’s more comfortable to be around [link]
Looks to me like that is a ficus retusa (ginseng ficus). Ginseng ficus can generally be “indoor” bonsai, but you’re gonna need a bit more light than a desk lamp. It may be a good idea to put it by the window AND installing grow lights like these or these if you want something more budget friendly, but do keep in mind that the first would be better. If you want to keep it on your desk, you can use the second ones because they clip onto desks, but be aware that these lights have lesser output and they wouldn’t have the boost from the light coming from the window. If you have somewhere to stick the strip lights on the desk that would allow them to shine down on the tree, that would be second best to keeping it by the window with the strip lights shining down from the top of the windowsill. Hope this helped!
I like my bendy lights, they appear to be doing a good enough job. These were the only ones I thought were etoliating, if any were. The rest of my plant babies are doing a pretty good job! This light is what I have placed decently close (less than a foot away from the tallest succulent) and I use succulent plant food too. I am happy that they're not actually etoliated, just like to grow weird!
I have absolutely no idea. I don’t see those specifications listed. It’s this: [link]
In 2 or 3 days they will have been growing for a 3 weeks. I had great success with this grow light ( [link] ) and i used fox farm soil :)
You can get a small grow light for about $33 on Amazon. You can get a few cheaper, but search for 'full spectrum grow light'.
From amazon! Here you go!
Hi! I use these two products:
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plant,... [link]
Grow Light Plant Lights for... [link]
You totally don’t need to use both of them, the first one would be good enough. I bought these two for different uses but ended up using both of them at the same time. I leave them on for at least 12 hours a day.
Some information on my Ginseng Ficus.
Height: 18 in. (including pot) and Width: 9-10 in.
For the upcoming 9 months, I'll be living inside of an apartment and looking to start growing my Bonsai in that environment. The main concern I have is lighting, I have no southern-facing window with the only window I have being eastern-facing. This window isn't even the biggest and I'm concerned about the health of my tree if it had to live in these conditions. However, the option for a glow lamp should hopefully solve this issue. The issue in that being I have zero clues what glow lamp is optimal for my scenario nor what exact specifications I need to look for in a glow lamp. I've down small amounts of research and found you need roughly 300 nm-800 nm spectrum but am unsure if that's actually true. If anyone could provide some guidance or insight on what I should be looking for that'd be greatly appreciated.
I've attached three glow lamps I show through amazon that seemed like viable options(my price range is $50). Also, I've included an image of my bonsai tree to hopefully give you a better understanding of what I'm dealing with.
Ginseng Ficus Photo (This was not taken in the apartment I'll be living in, just another angle of the tree)
Thanks for reading! If you have any recommendations or lamps that have worked for you in the past I'd appreciate it if you commented those below. I'm looking for lamps that can be attached to a desk as that's where my tree will be.

When growing the peppers from seeds they recommended a heating pad and grow light in order to start them in February.
Just checked on Amazon.com and it's $31.99 after discount. I paid CAD$43.99 for it. Things are always more expensive in Canada ಠ_ಠ
