I wish they made more cute growlights 😔 hopefully now that plants have taken off someone will fill that niche because the nice ones are just so expensive.
My lights are in my office so I don’t look at them as often as I could. I have one of those three pronged lights in an IKEA cube shelf so it’s covered from the side, and lower than eye level so it doesn’t shine in my face unless I’m on the floor. But it is quite bright and I wouldn’t put it somewhere I have to stare at it.
The other light I have is a light panel like this (https://www.amazon.com/Roleadro-Spectrum-Seedings-Blooming-Hydroponic/dp/B07QRQQ7B4/) that I love bc the LEDs are indented into the metal which makes it impossible to shine in your eyes unless you’re directly under it. I sit across from it on a couch and it doesn’t bother me at all, just acts like some nice ambient lighting in an office thats otherwise quite dark which I love (don’t need an overhead lamp!). I would highly recommend getting a panel that has the LEDs indented like that (I’m sure there’s other sizes) if you’re going to put it somewhere in your periphery so it doesn’t shine in your eyes. Just be mindful of where you’re looking and how a light source there might distract you ie don’t put anything next to your tv or something lol. If you go the route of full spectrum bulb in a preexisting lamp fixture (would not recommend) you have to be super mindful of where it is bc you can’t really cover the bulb in a shade or it’ll negate the effect.
Happy I could help! When I was trying to pick out growlights it was a whole ordeal bc there’s so many and so little information... hope I put you on the path to success! Growlights are a very awesome tool if used properly.

I use these! I only recently installed them and they’ve been bringing the color back to my plants nicely. I used to use shop lights and my succulents lost literally all their color lmao

I got them about a month ago and they’ve worked well so far. It’s not an insane amount of light, but it’s enough to hold them over through the winter :)
Well for under 50$ you won’t get a HIGH quality grow light, but you have a lot of options that will work for casual plants. If you’re using it for many plants, invest in a panel like this: https://www.amazon.com/Roleadro-Spectrum-Seedings-Blooming-Hydroponic/dp/B07QRQQ7B4/ (check size obv and buy for your space). Or go for led tube style lights like this if you have a long shelf to attach them to: https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Lights-Spectrum-Sunlight-Equivalent/dp/B0814L4XPL/ If you’re using for one plant, you can try 2 or so of those 3 headed clip on lights and spread the across the whole plant (but they are quite Weak and hard to position). If you’re using growlights, you will need a light meter so either buy one or get an app to get a general idea of what the values are.
Don’t buy blurple lights, only get white full spectrum. Blurples for that price range are basically and not good for foliage plants. You will also need to keep the grow light max a foot away to have a positive effect. Further and the light rapidly plummets. I recommended looking up HouseplantJournal’s articles on light to familiarize yourself with it before buying growlights.
These are the ones I bought I'd recommend paying up for the "white" light instead of the red/blue
As someone who loves plants and antiques, please don’t modify this cabinet. Drilling holes in it would be such a shame. Could you instead take the door off its hinges and close off the front with wire, mesh, or something else cat-proof?
If you must use it for plants, please put the hole for the grow lights discreetly in a corner. Maybe a top back corner. Using it for aloes and succulents is a great plan, because they won’t need added humidity, which would be awful for the wood.
I have a few favorite lights, but I didn’t see you give dimensions, which is a critical factor. It looks like the cabinet isn’t that wide, so the usual Barrina T5s probably won’t work. This one is square, and this one is a shorter strip. Make sure you get LEDs, because you don’t want to trap heat in the cabinet and ruin the varnish.
Roleadro 11” square LED panel is a perfect fit.

I have two of these, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QRQQ7B4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
And one of these, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCVWFUE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
hanging from the ceiling by hooks.
And then I have a bunch of these, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PJJC8S?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
strapped to the ceiling of each shelf space with zip ties.
I have a large jade plant in a very large south facing window, but every winter it seems to get stressed and drops lots of leafs. I'm definitely not over watering, so I'm looking for a free standing grow light/lamp, without destroying my energy bill.
Should I get a LED panel like this?
Or bulb and clip on lamp along these lines?
I got this light from Amazon. I have read good things about this brand Roleado. So we shall see how they do! I have had surprisingly great results with my $20 current light but they no longer sell it and I didn’t have the same great results with a different similar one. So 🤞 this panel that claims 3500k does as good a job!
These are my babies that began to start looking beautiful after being put under my current lamp. The peacock and 1st quartz (unsure if proper id) were clearance rescues that became swans.
