You should totally DIY those things. They have great kits coming out all the time. Here's one that's cheaper than that IKEA kit and is cuttable and has a wireless remote :)
Just Bought a light strip off Amazon and mounted it to the back. This one: LEDwholesalers 12-Volt 16.4-ft RGB Color-Changing Kit with Controller and IR Remote, Power Supply, and LED Strip in White PCB, 2034RGB-R2+3369+3208 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0040FJ27S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VubIDbB5TMGC4
I believe it was this or very similar to this... There are a lot of options when it comes to these strips. We wanted an RGB one, the remote is nice too...
Well, you have 2 options:
1) Buy a kit like this one and install it on your room. There are some that come with a controller so you can turn it on/off and change colors.
2) Instead of buying a LED strip adapted to a power outlet, buy one adapted to a molex and plug it to your PC PSU. If your case have those rubber holes for watercooling, wire the strip through there or through one of the slot shields from the back of the case (like the one you removed to install your GPU) and that's it. It will turn on/off together with your PC.
I used a similar strip lighting with remote from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040FJ27S) for above cabinet and under cabinet lighting in my kitchen remodel. I also have them set up behind my computer monitor. They work well once you set up your own colors. The "white" out of the box is a pretty harsh bluish-white. I would suggest that wherever you put them, you get a better adhesive or double sided tape because the one they include on it sucks and starts to fail pretty quickly.
I'm sorry to say that I was unable to document the process of converting the cluster to LEDs, I did all the soldering and wiring at work where I work on a lot of prototypes and taking photos is a big no-no. However, this is the kit I was working with, the controller runs off a 12V DC input so you can power it directly off the cluster wiring, the LED strips have solder tabs about every 6 inches where you can cut them and run wires to the next strip, and of course you have to sand off the green backing on the gauge faces.
I will mention there is some trial and error involved with getting the LED placement right and you need to be somewhat skilled in soldering and have a decent, temperature controlled soldering iron as the solder tabs are tiny; your $8 radio shack iron will make this project nearly impossible.
thanks!
I got this:

I probably overpaid a bit, but i'd rather a bit more and purchase from Amazon than deal with waiting a while for overseas vendors.
Looks like your easiest solution is the microwave. There's an outlet in that cabinet for it, right? You get one of these babies http://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Changing-Flexible-Controller-44-button/dp/B0040FJ27S then plug it into that outlet and use the remote. Running low voltage line through cabinets is easy, sometimes there are even spaces between the cabinets to allow for these lines without any drilling needed. This is your simplest, cheapest option.
The real trick is the cabinetry on the far wall by the sink. Not sure how you are going to get a line there. You can't run low voltage line through walls. Putting an outlet in the cabinet there would still require an electrician if you don't want to do it yourself.
If I were doing this, I would want two outlets, one by the sink and micro hidden in the cabinetry, both wired to a switch. Then you can plug in whatever undercab lights you choose. This will require tapping into another lighting circuit, running a line to a wall switch and then running line in the walls to the two outlets. Get some estimates, but I'm predicting this shouldn't be much more than a half day of work for any electrician.
Edit: Also clarify what you mean by plug in. Do you already have outlets in the cabinets? Where were you going to plug into.
... that is way fucking better than what I got from amazon,
Mine barely light up anything that isn't more than 3m distance from the LED. Yours look lik they have the whole back lit up. Do you have your strips on the back of the monitor itself?
Strip LED Lighting with a remote.Tape is already on the back of the strip lighting and I stuck them to this wrap around shelving I made in my daughter's room about a foot from the ceiling. cool effect lighting and very versatile.

This was the one I saw mentioned.
It's got good reviews, and was well received in the other post.
I bought this one and I was able to reuse the led strip that I did not use. By getting another receiver I was able to set up another set of lights behind my television for late night viewing. They all used the same remote:
LEDwholesalers 16.4ft RGB Color Changing Kit with LED Flexible Strip, Controller with 44-button Remote and Power Supply, 2034RGB+3315+3215 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0040FJ27S/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Bpg-ub0C6YZN2
I used this one: LEDwholesalers 16.4ft RGB Color Changing Kit with LED Flexible Strip, Controller with 44-button Remote and Power Supply, 2034RGB+3315+3215 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0040FJ27S/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Bpg-ub0C6YZN2
I had a spare cable that fit in the inlet plug for the AC power of the receiver which I used for this so I didn't need to sacrifice the original cable. The receiver (or power brick can't remember) says it uses 12v so I split the power cable between the receiver and AC brick and kept about 4-5 inches of cable, there's only a positive and negative. Stripped those cables and soldered (you could just heat shrink them together too) to a molex extension and that's it. Plugged it in and it worked. Took about 5-10 min to do.
I also was left with spare strip which I was able to reuse behind my television so I bought another receiver and use that as well. They all use the same controller so I am able to have everything synced up together.

It looks super sketchy from the back, but great from the front.
I have this LED strip. It comes with everything to set it up. It's plugged into the wall and comes with a little remote that can turn it on/off as well as change the colour.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040FJ27S/ref=pe_62810_80085760_em_1p_0_ti
This is the one, it has a full color spectrum and you can save 6 preset colors of your choice. Comes with remote and battery, it has brightness settings and illuminates incredibly well behind my 50" plasma. Been working for 6 months so far with no problems.
It's very easy to do, sticky backed, removable, and corners are easy to do if you buy the pre-done 90 degree angles.
They come with a remote, power supply, and even have an adhesive back. Just plug them in and go.
Yup, about half your pictures are cove lighting, and the other half lighting pillars and walls is up lighting. If that's the effect you're going for, the product I linked should do quite nicely. If you have the money, I would wholy suggest getting RGB LEDs and an appropriate controller, just in case someday you want to change it up. This kit comes with everything you need, and has some picture examples which I think match what you are looking for. You can certainly find cheaper kits on eBay, just keep in mind that for RGB you will need the LEDs, a controller and a power supply.
It's incredibly easy. They sell the kits on Amazon for really cheap. They're waterproof, and best of all, can be set to any color you want. That might sound cheesy when thinking about blue, or green but in reality, you can use it to set whatever temperature white light you want. Pure white, a little bit yellow, very warm, etc.
Go crazy with PWM controlled RGB LED strips such as this.
I use those to light my home office. I made a large wooden square out of some pieces of 1x4, attached/ran the LED strip around the top of it a few times, and hung it from the ceiling so it reflected off the white ceiling. It makes a very awesome indirect lighting system.
I bought a set of these LED lights from amazon a couple of months ago, they are VERY bright, they would be absolutely perfect for projects of this nature. The strip can even be cut and reconnected with wires if desired. This controller has a few different fade modes, and ability to make all the colors stay constant. With different controller types you can even connect to music, which would be nice,
Here is the Amazon equivalent. I have had two sets for about three years, still working great.
I went with this controller that came with the strip for my crown molding. It drives about 50' or so of LEDs. The included remote has 20 preset colors, or you can program your own colors by varying the brightness of each red, green, and blue LED. You can dim the preset colors (although not custom), and it lets you flash between RGB or 7 colors, or a constant fade between colors. I'd assume that it works outside, although you'd have to use some creativity to make sure that the infrared sensor is visible when you use the remote. You might be able to keep the controller/ supply inside and then run your 18/4 out to the lights.
get rid of that tube lighting in your slides and grab these
they sit flat and you can change to many different colors. Perfect for slides
Looks like this I was just checking these out the other night install on my newly build platform bed as underglow.
Honestly this might be a good place to start. It is 5m long and comes with a power supply and a remote control. It also has 3m sticky back so it can adhere almost anywhere. The nice thing about this strip is that you can safely cut it to whatever length you desire. Perhaps utilize this and build/create a reflector to project the light in better direction.
Here ya go buddy. Amazon.

I use this one.
Get something that doesn't require any wireless configuration to work (in my opinion.)
Here's a brand I have used for 6 years without issue: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040FJ27S/
I wonder how bright they are compare to what I already own?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040FJ27S/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I am looking for something to replace these. My issue with my current set is the LED's brightness tends to decay over time. Changing the power supply usually resolves this. But I would prefer an alternative solution.

How bright would you say the strip is?
They look like they could be these, in which case they're RGB.
They're as good as the look from the picture as they are in real life.
Generic one with a remote, looks kind of like this one: https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Color-Changing-2034RGB-R2-3369-3208/dp/B0040FJ27S
How do you feel about adding LED lighting? Such as this. You could attach this to the underside of the desk or the back of the monitors.
Or what about upgrading your monitors? You could get a nice 4k monitor. My only other suggestion would be buying a new desk.
I used this one and doubled it up. I folded it in half, didn't crease it just made a U in the one end, then sucked it thru with a vacuum.
https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Color-Changing-2034RGB-R2-3369-3208/dp/B0040FJ27S
If they are like the ones I buy they are adhesive-backed. Still, I tend to use small Command Adhesive hooks to hold most of my LED strips.
What about something like this... Looks like a simple 4 conductor RGBW. https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Color-Changing-2034RGB-R2-3369-3208/dp/B0040FJ27S
Heres the led strip: https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Color-Changing-2034RGB-R2-3369-3208/dp/B0040FJ27S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482794085&sr=8-2&keywords=ledwholesalers
I used corsair's CUE software to link the colors of my keyboard and mouse to be the same. (K65 lux RGB keyboard, M65 rgb mouse).
The LED strip came with a remote which I use to change the colors and brightness as well as the mode (it has pulsing/breathing mode and a strobe mode). I usually set the color as violet, to match my keyboard, mouse and computer.
Heres my computer: http://imgur.com/a/3o235
Just went shopping for one. Color Changing Led Strip with remote. Looks like it will be very entertaining.
probably something like this or anything similar.
You can get ROLLS of remote controllable LED lights online. My husband and I use them for lighting our computer cases for instance. Just do a little research in the reviews to make sure people have a good experience with their safety and longevity for the price. https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Changing-Flexible-Controller-44-button/dp/B0040FJ27S
If you are looking for an easy solution around 100 to 200 give philips HUE a try? You can control with your phone and they have a couple of products that provide ambient lighting. https://www.amazon.com/Philips-259945-Bloom-Frustration-Free/dp/B00I12YFP0/ref=pd_sim_60_5?ie=UTF8&dpID=41j4KdlKf9L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=YGM42E2837A7BAV7AW3M and this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0W3CI0/ref=s9_dcacsd_bhz_bw_c_x_6 and they have lots of other hue products too.
You could build up a crown moulding with a small shelf before the ceiling then line it with rope lighting to create a lit ceiling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaSHR6mfbRE
You could buy a couple of lamps from ikea, craigslist, marshalls, tj max, home goods, then put lower wattage lights (40w or 25w) in them on the 2700 (warmer) side of the spectrum. Dimmable lamps would be a plus just make sure the bulbs are dimmable too. They could be standard lamps, wall mounted plug in lamps, pendants you plug in then hang from the ceiling or even something more zen like a salt lamp: https://www.amazon.com/YYout-Himalayan-Crystal-Dimmable-Electric/dp/B01DP47SDY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1469690772&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=dimmable+salt+lamp&psc=1
You can put any pluggable light on a remote with a light switch remote. They can be pretty handy... Or the clapper lol. https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Wireless-Electrical-Household-Appliances/dp/B00DQ2KGNK/ref=sr_1_7?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1469690399&sr=1-7&keywords=plug+remote
I used something like this behind my monitors. Custom wiring to organize the cables better. If you want them inside your computer and desk from the same kit, you'll probably need to do some other wiring. The adhesive isn't the best, so if your case gets warm, it may not stick after some time. Also, with this kit, all the leds will be the same color at the same time.

If you want individually addressable colors, you can get something like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ZHB9M6A/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1460517202&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=led+light+strip+programmable&dpPl=1&dpID=51QEABBmlNL&ref=plSrch
Thanks! This is the shelf: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49903639/
I used this for the lighting: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040FJ27S?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040FJ27S these. have one on top and bottom, soon making a custom controller.
For anyone else who is curious - these look to be them: http://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Changing-Flexible-Controller-44-button/dp/B0040FJ27S/ref=pd_sim_sbs_60_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=11N93CM3F68HR4113R3X
Only $30!
I have the ikea set behind my PC it's almost 8 years old, but there are far cheaper option on Amazon now. The Ikea ones are very rugged however and will stand up to being moved all over.
IKEA. http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/50192365/
Amazon http://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Changing-Flexible-Controller-44-button/dp/B0040FJ27S
Obviously the ikea ones give a bit more flexibility because they are not just one string. I actually plugged one into a fan port on my mobo and depending on how I seat it can make it red or blue.
you can get something like this for cheap off amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Changing-Flexible-Controller-44-button/dp/B0040FJ27S
I ran a strip of RGB LED lights around the back of my desk and under the right side
I got this kit from Amazon and then got this controller which allows the lights to react to music.
I was looking at these earlier. Trippy hippy lights.
I bought them on Amazon. They have both shorter and longer strips if you so desire.
A friend of mine has a version of these in his PC. Since my desk is 3x5. this is a near perfect length.
I just did a somewhat similar project with this and two of these above crown moulding. These are "analog" strips, meaning that the entire length can only change one color at a time. The included remote has 20 dimmable preset colors, or you can program your own (although you can't dim those). It also lets you flash or fade through either red/green/blue or 7 colors at various speeds.
You can also purchase "digital" led strips that let you control individual (or at least small groups) of diodes. This would let you have multi-colored chase or fade setups. All of the strips that I found were out of my price range, so I didn't do much research on them.
You can chain strips together with either connectors (available on Amazon) or a soldering iron if you're handy. I did notice that the diodes towards the end dim slightly at the end of a 20' or so strip. Since the lights run all around the room and I didn't want a dim patch right next to a brighter patch, I built two 20' strips (out of 3 16.5' strips) and hooked them both to a Y connector, so that the two ends meet on the other side of the room, and the dimmer ends fade into each other.
The only problems that I ran into are that the adhesive backing is crap (hotglue did wonders, though) and that there are some slight color variations between the strips, although they are really only visible when the color is set to whiteish, and even then it's not that noticeable.
The strips are only about 3/8" or so wide, and very flat, so they are easy to hide. The trickiest part is hiding the power supply and controller.
Hereis the Amazon equivalent.
No, there are tons of LED strips that have pre-coded patterns in them. Here is an example!
I just posted this elsewhere, I will copy and paste because I'm lazy.
It can be whatever color you want and the ability to cut it allows you to use all 5m in different areas/split up using these connectors
I actually am using an old LED strip that I had laying around. I just threw it up the other day to see if I would like bias lighting. After a few days of use, I love it and will be researching a proper kit that integrates with Harmony.
