Seeing this and reading the comments has me so happy. As soon as I saw it I was like.... ah yes the song of my people.

Anyways, I am a new engineering graduate working in R&D. There are very few female engineers at work, and only one other female engineer who is 30 or under so it has been really tricky trying to figure out what to wear. I want to look professional and not try to blend in with the guys too much- but also don't want to look like a kid.

Engineers here will wear everything from a ratty t shirt and jeans, khakis and polos, to dress pants and button downs with nice shoes. Some men have repeatedly made comments how they don't buy into the fashion or looking nice and purposefully embrace the slob look because engineers don't care about looks (always makes my blood boil. My most recent comeback to that is idk I think the chemical engineers that make cosmetics care a whole lot about looks because that gives them a paycheck. Usually it shuts down the conversation). I don't have to wear safety shoes which gives me some wiggle room. Just closed toe and heel shoes. I'm in the lab for about 1/3 of my day and in the office for the other 2/3.

I'd say my style is lots of basics with a twist. I like some preppy items and some boho items. I do have a couple of work polos which are great for when I can't decide what I want to wear or wake up late because everyone wears branded polos all the time. Work bags are a good way I express my style. Currently I've been using an oxblood tote with a pink paisley scarf tied to it. I also like using bright colored notebooks. My go to meeting notebook is this. I have it in yellow and purple and like them both a lot. I personally prefer the dotted grid pattern. I think it helps differentiate me in a sea of black spiral notebooks. If I'm in the lab I will use a basic $0.50 notebook because I'm worried about something happening to my nice notebook. I'll just transfer things over and it isn't a big deal. I love how scarves look in my hair, but am worried about them in the lab and looking to young with them. Recently I have really enjoyed playing with texture and details. For example: knitted herringbone zip up sweater, ribbon trimmed shirts, buttons all up the sleeves or button up the back shirts, scalloped edges, silk shirts, chinos in fun colors (J crew factory and Ann Taylor Loft are my faves), corduroy (pants and tops!) I can wear jeans and will wear them 2ish times a week. Generally, I've found that I stay more muted in my tops and more daring with my pants. Olive, cream, burgundy, and grey are the main colors you'll see in my closet.

Safe style means me planning my days in advance. Sometimes I may have to run out to the lab for something, but if I know I'm going to be there all day then it's jeans sneakers and comfortable shirt time because my lab coat is literally 5 times bigger than it should be so no one can see anything. Skirts and dresses aren't permitted. I typically do a loose ponytail because if I do anything too tight I get a headache. I have sometimes braided my hair and then put it in a bun. I do not wear flowy shirts anymore as the ventilation has made my shirt blow up before. Everything must have the option of being tucked in. My typical lab accessories are my apple watch and a basic Kendra Scott necklace. I like the look of the lab coat because I think it shows a different facet of my personality so I'm okay with my looks not matching my regular style when I have the coat on.

Shoe inserts!!! Game changer!!! I love cute shoes, but walking back and forth from the lab and office and standing on concrete can give me major feet pain. Shoe inserts allow me to wear cute shoes and not be miserable. I have textured brown loafers and these as my black dress shoes. Chelsea boots are also a staple. I always keep a hairbrush at my desk and brush my hair before I go to any meeting. It helps me feel polished. I've also started leaning away from skinny jeans because they always bag out by the end of the day and I look like I'm wearing a diaper. I really do like stiffer jeans, chinos, and when I'm feeling fancy something like these. The higher the rise the better. Also I wear lots of layers.

In high school I loved fashion but in college I became a sweats girl through and through. Partially because I felt like I didn't have the time, partially because I felt judged where it was like oh maybe if she spent less time putting on mascara she would have gotten better grades. I've been trying really hard to build my confidence back up and wear clothes for me which means me slowing testing the waters again. Being in a field with many men I have heard inappropriate comments which makes me spend a decent amount of time considering my outfits. Sometimes I purposefully dress more masculine or feminine depending on how I want to be perceived.

After ~4 years of giving up on my appearance I'm still determining my style. I used to wear a lot of makeup to work but with masks it just doesn't work out well. With masks I don't wear a ton of makeup, but try to make sure my hair always looks nice whether I wear it as natural waves or heat style it.

Wow this is a lot longer than I expected it to be but hopefully it is helpful.
Agreed with the Leuchtturm1917. I just got mine & it's heavenly. Best place to purchase (if you're looking for a good variety in color) seems to be Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FWQXVS0?psc=1&smid=A1E8AJDELN2AKR
