Also while the GFCI does allow 3-prong plugs on a circuit without ground they must all have a sticker that says “no equipment ground” (these come in the GFCI box). This does provide shock protect, it does not provide an actual ground path that some electronics and surge suppressors require.
Another option is to purchase and install 2 blade ungrounded outlets. Still manufactured and sold for exactly your case.
> since they are plugged into surge protectors anyway, so that should help from the power surge aspect, right?
Time out. If the surge suppressor is plugged into a 2 prong outlet via an adapter you’re probably not getting surge suppression. You might be, but to find out you need an electrician’s low impedance voltage tester like a Klein ET60 from Amazon or Home Depot. (Note: low impedance are the key words.. most standard multi-meters are high impedance... a high impedance meter might lie for this test.) with a low impedance meter measure hot to ground, if you get full voltage then the adapter can provide ground and the surge suppressor will work. Also a surge suppressor plugged into a GFCI with “No Equipment ground” will NOT surge suppressor, it needs that ground wire.
> My biggest thing is wanting to be able to plug anything in the wall without having to use the two to three prong adapters. Those things are everywhere in my house right now and I hate it. Not to mention most of my outlets are god forsaken old and don't hold the plugs very securely.
You can still buy new replacement 2 blade non-grounding outlets. They are sold for exactly your situation (note that’s a 10 pack) replacement of 2 blade outlets.
GFCI is the other solution but keep in mind it protects the user from shock, it doesn’t provide a path to ground for static or surges.
(In a prior house where I had some 2 blade non-grounded outlets I assigned adapter to equipment that might need it... I used cutoff throways from a nylon cable tie to tether the adapter to a cord. When you take that approach there really aren’t so many.)
