You may also want to look into getting charcoal bags to put in the closet and your drawers for extra, localized smell removal help. Plastic airtight bins are likely better than the bags you are using.

Edit: eventually, not immediately. I know allergy shots take time. And if you do adopt, consider taking them to a groomer that can bathe them or at least thoroughly wipe them down to remove the dried saliva from their fur to reduce the “load” they bring into your home.

this is the air purifier I have for them. It sits about 3-4 feet away from the cage. I can’t get it any closer to the cage because the nearest outlet is far away and I already have it plugged into a extension cord. I’m definitely not comfortable plugging it in to two connected extension cords lol I’m looking for a VERY trustworthy longer extension cord that I can keep it plugged into to get it closer to the cage
I was just about to say this! I live in the same type of older apartment and a white noise machine is great. You get used to it. I have an air purifier that I run while I’m home that sounds just like a white noise machine and purifies the air at the same time. I've tried that and didn't really get that much air moving through the filter. I thought maybe it was because the box fan doesn't have enough static pressure to really pull air through the filter effectively enough. Maybe my filter was too restrictive or something though, who knows. The air purifier I bought moves a lot more air though.

Also if you are concerned for your baby in the room after it's cleaned you can have a hepa air filter going. That would catch any air borne fiberglass.
Our "fiberglass" never really floated in the air for more than a few hours after making the mistake. It was more like wet paint. Anything that touched the matress it got on. Anything that touched and item that touched the bed ALSO got it on it.
Buy one of these air purifiers form Amazon. They handle smells very well and operate quietly.

If the glass is clear and there's no fungus or haze, I would keep it. I don't buy the "tar inside" argument. It takes a lot of debris to make a noticeable impact on an image.
If you leave it in a well-ventilated area the smell will be completely gone in 2-3 weeks. You can accelerate it to 1-2 days if you have a HEPA air purifier similar to this, then you can just leave it on top for a couple of days and the smell will be gone.

It actually caused my asthma to come back so I had to get an inhaler. Having an air purifier does wonders. I recommend a LEVOIT Core 300.

If you have the means, this air purifier has been a life saver. I’ll run this while smoking and the smell is gone witching a few hours. Quicker if you have a fan or window open to help circulate.

HEPA filters generally can filter smoke. I ordered this one for my apartment (not an endorsement, haven't tried it yet).
If it gets as bad as it did last year, and you don’t have central air conditioning, you’ll want one at least for your bedroom at night.
This one isn’t hugely expensive (~$100), and just as importantly, the replacement filter is widely available (~$30). It worked for me in my tiny at-home office last year, and we also used one in our bedroom. Data from my indoor air quality monitor (Airthings Wave) showed it worked well.
If you can afford it, buy a replacement filter WHEN you buy the device, because both were sold out for several weeks last year when the smoke got bad.
Honestly at bare minimum should get a HEPA filter fan. I got this one and like it filter I know you probably have different options but wanted to share. One thing to know fans are NOT quiet. The filters are so restrictive that it takes alot to push the volume of air. I have my filter next to the printer so i bought a cement block and used the foam that came with the filter and some spare carpet insolation to cut down on the vibrations.
Honestly I would talk to your parents and maybe have them watch the video. If I had a kid and he told me that he was worried about his health and wanted a place to put it I would work something out. This hobby teaches you so much. Atleast your learning and not out getting drunk/knocking up the neighbor (or getting knocked up).
I'm the overly cautious type so I take the issues seriously. Others don't so it's up to you to judge what you think is reasonable.
FWIW as someone else said a HEPA filter should capture VOCs.
This is important because if I remember correctly VOCs are released for months after you paint, albeit obviously in lower numbers than the first few days.
So maybe while you're out see about ordering a few filters for rooms you will sleep or hang out in a lot.
I actually just ordered this one last night, I can't speak to it's use as I haven't used it yet but the filter is said to last a long time and replacements are reasonably priced.
Note: it has multiple filter options, for VOCs you'll want the "toxin absorber" filter which it says targets VOCs.
I got a puppy about 2 months ago who mainly hangs out and sleeps in my (pretty small) room. Her crate stays in my room as well. There was a noticeable dog smell anytime I left the room and came back.
I purchased an air purifier from Amazon over a month ago and I got the pet filters in hopes of it helping the smell. The smell has noticeably gone away, most of the time I don’t smell the dog at all anymore. I’m overall really happy with it. Even my mom who is not in my room as much as I am said she doesn’t smell the dog anymore. Before it was pretty bad. It really does help and make a difference. I purchased it March 10 and have still not had to change out the filter, although I do clean it off every once in a while.

Yeah, after years of waking up severely congested I woke up one day and ordered the LEVOIT air purifier. Now I just wake up slightly congested! I really like it though. If you're a light sleeper, it has a sleep mode where its super quiet. you can also turn off the LED lights if they bother you as you sleep.

I got this air purifier from amazon this spring. I live in a similar size apartment and it has been amazing, especially during allergy season and now with the wildfires.
I have this Levoit in my guest bedroom and while it's not completely silent, it works pretty well for under $100. Downside is it can't be taken apart for deep cleaning. I also have two of these Coway - one in my bedroom, one in my living room, bought on sale for around $140 iirc. They are easy to clean and very silent. Good luck!

Before anyone points me to the test results they included note that that isn't a test result for their product but for one of the components of their filter. And further note that that test result does not meet the typical 99.97% HEPA standard at 0.3 microns.
I'm also skeptical of their comparisons to other air filters. Like they compare against a Black and Decker (no idea which model) in one table to show better air flow but then compare against totally other air filters to show better prices. Also to demonstrate "lower power use" they compare the voltages the purifiers run at (as if that matters).
And just look at their comparison to "amazon brands". Just search "HEPA air purifier" on Amazon and take the first result. It costs a third of their product, has twice the air flow (no idea where they got the numbers in their table) and actually contains a HEPA filter.
You need a good Levoit air purifier in your spot.

I can answer some of your questions. I bought a condo right next to a major highway about two years ago. Like you, I'm only home in the evenings and I also plan to sell by my 5 year mark. I read all the news articles on how horrible living near a highway is. The pollution and noise are bad, obviously. But you can certainly do things to help. I look at it like this. People who live in major cities like NYC also have constant noise as well as pollution exposure. Is everyone there dealing with severe health issues? I don't think so. Noise is unavoidable in some areas. I also have read an article about longterm health effects of smoking if you stop. The article said after ten-fifteen years with no smoking, your body recovers. Your risk for developing health issues due to smoking drop significantly. I would think it would be the same for highway pollution exposure.

Keep in mind that the Levoit has a filter included (hepa + pre-filter + carbon) which lasts about 6 months, so this 2 pack would extend that to about 18 months. Unlike the Ikea, these include all the filters in one set. The Ikea has a $6 hepa filter + $12 charcoal filter and no optional replaceable pre-filter (it's built into the mesh cover of the purifier) so cost comes to about the same for Ikea of these 2 packs
I feel your pain. I tried a bunch of stuff with no results, even the growers intake filter. I recently got an air filter for the room the LR3 is in and no more smells. I also started to soak the globe and waste bin in hot water and vinegar once a month. I replace the seal strips about monthly now, I purchased these and cut to fit the LR3. I also change the carbon filters at the same time. I use these and also cut to fit. They are bit thinner than the ones sold by LR, so I double up.

I have a tiny kitchen in apt without central air & my window units in other rooms. I thankfully have a window so I use a window fan used in RV's with both fan/exhaust option.
Also Instant pot is great appliance to have for this situation. I been using it when it's too hot to cook. That and toaster oven.
Unfortunately I doubt your building can do much bc in order to provide truly proper venting they'd have to exhaust out to exterior which is not a simple task.

So sorry for all you are going through.
1: Decide if they are allowed on your couch/bed/chairs.... if you want to try to keep the fur down then I would say don't let them on your furniture. Get them nice comfy crates and/or dog beds, and place them there with a nice bully stick or stuffed kong so they get used to relaxing on those and not your furniture. Be consistent, NEVER let them on the furniture so they know that's the rules. Buy a good "pet" vacuum and vacuum the house every few days that should help.... also invest in lint rollers that will be your new life saver. That and the lilly brush for scraping off hair.
2: For any dog smell id recommend a good HEPA air purifier, it will work wonders!
3: I usually use Earth Bath shampoo, i find it's not harsh on their skin and the smell isn't too overwhelming. If you can i'd suggest taking them to a groomer for a good wash and grooming, even if it's just for their first time before taking them home. That way they can get nice and clean, de shedded, and have their nails trimmed, etc.
4: I don't really have many essential cleaning supplies, I have brushes, toothbrush, and shampoo/conditioner. You may need feet wipes if their paws get dirty in your area. As for household cleaning, if they are having accidents on carpet/rugs definitely get a carpet spot cleaner, this one is awesome for small areas, and the lilly brush is good for hair removal.
5: Toys will depend on what they are interested in. Kongs are great for enrichment, stuff them with their food, PB, freeze yogurt or wet food... keeps them busy for a while, and gets their brain working. My dog loves fetch, so balls are a must, I think maybe you are talking about nylabones which are good if they like to chew. I would also suggest Whimzees orBully sticks for good chews.
6: For a good "3-in-1" the price sounds about right, your options are probably something like Bravecto or Trifexis. Many dogs have SEVERE reactions to oral medication though, so watch out for adverse reactions like vomiting, seizures, lethargy, etc. Personally I use Vectra 3d which I like. I would say the oral medication is better for Severe flea infestations, but Vectra works fine for my needs.
7: It's awesome of you to think about giving up your dream car... Subaru is definitely the "dog" car but I would go with what you ultimately want, just needs to have a back seat really. I would HIGHLY suggest a hammock for your back seat, it will save your seats!!
8: I would make sure you are looking at their food, make sure they at least have a high quality kibble. Don't feed Iams, Blue Buffalo, Purina, none of the 'generic name brand' stuff, it's full of nasty fillers and is a waste of money. If you want to stick to kibble i would suggest something like Merrick, Wellness, something where the first few ingredients are MEAT not corn or fillers. I'd personally say feed raw but that's a big commitment.
