You can probably find one with a filter though if you don't like the idea of buying distilled water. But there are definitely cheaper ones out there. One thing I Do like about using distilled though is you don't end up with the white powdery deposit on leaves and furniture from using tap water.
That's understandable. My humidifer is made to be used with essential oils. I think the main difference between cool-mist diffusers and humidifers is water capacity.
I'm glad you spoke up about essential oils and cats. If they had lemon oil in that thing it could be very bad.
