The latest Christian book I read was Liberation Theology and Sexuality (2006), which is a collection of essays edited by the late Argentinian theologian Marcella Althaus-Reid. She’s well-known for her critique of liberation theology’s inattention to issues of gender and sexuality, and she collects essays from liberation theologians who also make such critiques — some of whom had been doing so for decades. To be honest, I was a little disappointed, as I didn’t find the book very edifying theologically. It served best as a sort of historical insight into the breadth of liberation theological thought at a certain point in time. One of the best essays is “Love in Times of Dictatorships: Memoirs from a Gay Minister in Buenos Aires,” which is about, well, what it’s title says. It’s a fascinating, but at times both heart-wrenching and inspiring account.
