My only critique: Conservatism is not an ideology. It's based on history and experience.
I'm glad that you are open-minded enough to break out of the bounds of your comforts. There are a lot of voices in the conservative community. You'll get a lot of mixed answers. We are a diverse group of individuals. We are very much the melting pot. There is one subject in which we truly band together: The Constitution. Our Framers were not idiots. They knew what they were doing when they put together this Constitution. The obliteration of the Constitution by the Left and Right is exactly why we have an overreaching, soft-tyranny, and a lawless president.
The one thing conservatives have on their side is education. We are very, very educated people, no matter how hard the left tries to paint us as morons. So, instead of giving you my own thoughts to try to persuade you left or right, I'll give you to some voices in the conservative movement that are very, very smart and articulate:
Mark Levin: Liberty and Tyranny (The difference between liberty and tyranny, heavy read, about 300 pages)
Ben Shapiro: Primetime Propaganda
Interview of Ben Shapiro on CSPAN (3 hours) on his books. The first hour is all about his books and his viewpoints. Definitely something worth looking into.
That's a lot of books of Ben Shapiro. The dude was the youngest nationally syndicated columnist at the age of 17, wrote his first book in college at the age of 19 (Brainwashed, written in 3 weeks), graduated Harvard Law.
Mark Levin is considered The Great One of conservatism. He has his own radio show that is extremely educational, keeping Republicans and Democrats in check. www.marklevinshow.com
Mark Levin also has other books, but I believe Liberty and Tyranny does a great job.
