I used to write poetry all the time in my twenties, and even took a creative writing course elective in college. I don't write anymore but I've tried a few times to get back into it, but life happens and I lose focus. One of the books assigned to the course was Making Shapely Fiction by Jerome Stern. I still have it and its on my bookshelf. Its laid out as a series of exercises designed to help you work on specific things. Character development and voice, stream of consciousness writing, etc. One of the things I enjoyed about using the book is that it does, in fact encourage you to write everyday, even if its just a paragraph or two. I hope this helps!
