Should be pretty straightforward, you could do this just following examples. Stepper motors and some pulleys should do the trick.
Check out Making Things Move by Dustyn Roberts. The author is an engineer who ended up teaching this stuff to art students. The book is an easy read and she has some example projects that I think are really close to what you're trying to do.
