Regarding metal locks: I design and sell cages that come with metal internal cylinder locks (pics in post history). I've shipped a lot of cages, and I've never heard of one rusting. I have customers who've been using the same lock for over a year. Can't say it would never happen, but it seems like a low risk.

If you're paranoid, toss one lock in the trash every month. At less than $2 per lock (4pack), that's not bad. And these are solid.
