For something like a kayak you just need crossbars or some foam and straps. You can spend a little bit more and get some J hooks for a more secure mount. I'm not sure what year you have but I just have some generic ones that look like Subaru's aero bars. Paid $105 for them and originally had them on a 18 crosstrek so they've held up for a few years. Have carried various things on them like duel kayaks, a canoe, camping gear, firewood, basket, plus a mounted canopy. Here's a link to the ones I have, they've increased a little in price, they're are plenty of similar ones on Amazon, my dealership said they're essentially the same generic ones they sell.
I’ve got a set from Amazon that I put on before the prinsu. If you’re close to the east coast I’d prolly just throw them your way for shipping if interested. I’m a ‘19 but I’m pretty sure they’d fit. For reference…

Bought these lockable ones. Our cargo box is a Yakima 16 we got off craigslist a couple years ago.
Amazon has quite a few and some of them even have locks. I currently have Yakima ones but my cousin that got his Forester last year purchased these ones below, as it had a higher load capacity and also is keyed. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08F7DH3NM?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_JPR4FP4Y4FX9G5F14CT8
I'm pretty happy with these on mine. Low profile and gets the job done. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08F7DH3NM/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_AN7D4FY60SZRGFQZXVQS
I'm using these crossbars I found on Amazon : crossbars
and the Thule Canyon XT basket. Both were very easy to install.
