As already mentioned by others, there's a lot more to math beyond what you've mentioned above, but on the presumption that something that covers from "numbers sets and arithmetic" to "calculus and differential equations", I might suggest Measurement by Paul Lockhart.

It definitely satisfies the "written for human beings" requirement, and it starts out with a discussion of shapes that any elementary school student could probably follow and then works its way up to calculus. You might have to look elsewhere for d.e. though.

In general, you'll probably find more success covering "*some*~~every~~thing about math" if you try to find a collection of books on various topics, rather than just one book.

These are not good recommendations for a beginner or someone who “doesn't want to continue studying math beyond this course”. The former is a kind of dictionary of problem solving strategies, and the latter is a lead-in to pure math.

If you want a Polya book, the best one to start on is the 2-volume *Mathematical Discovery*, but even might not really be pitched at your student here.

I would instead recommend something like Mason, Burton, & Stacey’s Thinking Mathematically or Gardiner’s Discovering Mathematics or with a different flavor Lockhart’s Measurement.

It’s hard to give good recommendations without more information about your student’s background, commitment level, and goals. “Study math better” and “wants to be well rounded” are very vague.

Measurement by Paul Lockhart is a great general math book. His other two books are also fantastic.

Measurement by Paul Lockhart. Doesn’t cover all of mathematics but tries to reveal the essence and beauty of it.
